Since its inception in 1899, the Detroit Golf neighborhood has offered luxury homes surrounding the historic Detroit Golf Club. With a quiet atmosphere, carefully curated homes and an exclusive membership to the club, this gated community has always been considered one of Detroit's most affluent areas.
"When they built the community, it was the 'who's who' area, so you'll find some of the prettiest architecture in the whole city. They were built with a lot of care," says William Adams, owner of Adams Realty and Detroit native.
Along with its well-kept homes, quiet ambiance, and historic golf club at its center, "It's flooding with professionals from all sorts of backgrounds, so living in this community will significantly increase your opportunities for networking, growth and opportunities," says Morris Hall, broker and owner of Maxim Properties LLC.
The Detroit Golf Club neighborhood takes great pride in keeping the neighborhood beautiful.

Custom-built homes on half-acre lots
There's a mix of Victorian, Colonial Revival and Tudor Revival homes lining the quiet roads of Detroit Golf. With an average home size of about 3,800 square feet, houses are significantly larger than the national average of approximately 1,900 square feet. Lots tend to be around a half-acre, which Hall considers an underrated perk. "Houses sit on lots larger than the average lot size you would find in Detroit. There's more yard for families to enjoy, which is kind of a jewel that usually goes unnoticed," he says.
Most homes are custom-designed and were built somewhere between 1920 and 1940. Unlike modern gated communities, all homes in Detroit Golf look different. There might be a three-bedroom Colonial Revival next door to a six-bedroom Tudor Revival. While one home might feature a backyard swimming pool, the next may offer more yard space. Adams shares his philosophy for finding the perfect house. "You will know when it's the house because it will put its arms around you and give you a hug," he says. "These houses do that because of their uniqueness."
Homes sell for as low as $400,000 and can reach upwards of $1.5 million, depending on their size, location and level of renovation.

Detroit Golf Course and Palmer Park
For over 120 years, the Detroit Golf Course has been at the center of this neighborhood and is one of the main draws to the area. With two 18-hole Donald Ross-designed courses and a historic clubhouse, Hall says living next to the golf course is a big deal. "That's the most prominent golf course in the city," he says. Members can tee up or spend time at the luxurious Clubhouse, which offers a swimming pool, three event spaces, outdoor tennis courts and more.
Palmer Park sits east of Pontchartrain Boulevard and has been a city staple for over 100 years. On sunny summer days, the sound of smooth RnB, the sweet smell of barbecue and good times fill the air. Adults throw food on the grills while kids flood the playscape. The 2.5-mile walking trail, which loops around the park, offers a convenient space for daily runs, and the dog park provides a place to spend time with four-legged friends. Palmer Park also features a volleyball court, tennis courts, and a new pickleball court.

Rocket Mortgage Classic and Michigan Medal Play
Since 2019, Rocket Mortgage Classic has been one of Detroit’s largest summer events and attracts thousands of people to Detroit Golf Club annually. Many residents opt to turn their homes into short-term rentals around this time to escape the noise. The professional golf tournament is the first PGA Tour tournament in Detroit and is an opportune way to show the world what the city has to offer.
The annual Michigan Medal Play, which allows amateur players to compete for The Peter Green Award, also takes place at Detroit Golf Club. After four rounds of competition, contestants are awarded a complimentary dinner in the Ball Room.
Shopping and dining on Woodward and Livernois
Locals travel outside the neighborhood for shopping and dining, but proximity to Livernois and Woodward means they don't have to go far. The section of Livernois between McNichols (6 Mile) and 8 Mile is called the "Avenue of Fashion" and has been around since the 1960s. Shops include everything from major retailers to locally owned boutiques. Mike's Fresh Market is a family-owned grocery store that's been around since 2004 and is a popular place to grab fresh produce and meats. Dining options range from Mediterranean staples at Bucharest Grill to southern classics at Kuzzo's Chicken & Waffles. On Woodward and 8 Mile, people shop at stores like Snipes, Five Below, Marshall's and Meijer.

Woodward and major expressways
Detroit Golf Club's central location is a mile west of the iconic Woodward Avenue, one of the city's principal thoroughfares. It's a 9-mile drive down Woodward, so drivers typically reach downtown in 25 minutes, The Lodge freeway is just 3 miles west of Detroit Golf, and Interstate 75 is 4 miles east. About 5 miles north of the neighborhood, interstate 696 simplifies commutes east and west. Detroit Golf's walkable layout, paved bike lanes and proximity to essentials mean that residents don't need to own a car, but most own at least one.
