Far West Detroit is small but offers plenty to explore nearby
As its name suggests, the small suburb of Far West Detroit resides on the Motor City’s western edge, south of Interstate 96. Though distanced from downtown attractions, the community is within walking distance of iconic Rouge Park, the city's largest green space, and a short trip from the local restaurants and markets of Telegraph Road and Warren Avenue. Homebuyers will also find a wave of recently updated midcentury homes throughout the area. “It’s up and coming,” says Sonny Bertoni, associate broker with Own It Realty, who has sold almost a dozen homes in the neighborhood and has four years of experience in the greater area. “There’s a bunch of renovation happening and a lot of families coming into the neighborhood.”
Rouge Park offers trails, golf, pools and events
Encompassing over 1,100 acres, Rouge Park is not only the largest park in the city, but the largest urban park in the state. It spans the neighborhood's eastern edge and offers miles of trails that wind along the Rouge River. Visitors can go mountain biking, practice swings on the 18-hole golf course, choose from three public pools, or try horseback riding at Buffalo Soldiers Heritage Association. The park is also a frequent hosting ground for events, such as the Rouge Park Winter Fest and the summertime Neighborhood Picnic, put on by the Far West Detroit Civic Association. The Caroline Kennedy Library of Dearborn Heights is 2 miles away and runs year-round indoor programming for all ages.
Residents shop and dine on Telegraph Road and Warren Avenue
With Telegraph Road less than a mile away, stores and restaurants are quick trips from the neighborhood. The Boneyard Bar-B-Q has been around for over 30 years and regularly appears in citywide “best of” lists for its barbecued ribs. Aldi and Randazzo’s Fruit & Vegetables are close by for grocery runs. Warren Avenue, directly south, features an abundance of Middle Eastern bakeries and markets selling everything from Halal meats to manakeesh and zaatar. “The food in the area is a melting pot of different cultures,” Bertoni says. The Heights shopping center, 4 miles away, is home to Target, T.J. Maxx and several other retail chains.
Bungalows and ranch-style homes fill the community
Like many Detroit suburbs, the community’s residential landscape comprises gridded streets. Mature trees sprout from grassy medians along the roadways, providing shade for sidewalks below. “You’ll see residents out walking the neighborhood when the weather is nice,” Bertoni says. The mid-20th-century bungalows and ranch-style homes feature brick-clad and white vinyl exteriors. Driveways are typically long and extend into backyards with detached garages. “A lot of homes are being purchased by investors and renovated, then sold to homeowners,” Bertono says. Prices range from $65,000 for a property needing repair to $280,000 for a recently renovated home.
Cody High School offers dual enrollment courses
Detroit Public Schools Community District serves the neighborhood and holds a C on Niche. Dixon Educational Learning Academy has a C-minus and teaches prekindergarten through eighth grade. Cody High School also receives a C-minus and offers dual enrollment, allowing students to earn transferable credits to several state universities and community colleges. School choice means additional educational options for families, including C-minus-rated Ann Arbor Trail Magnet Middle School, located in the community.
Interstate 96 connects neighborhood to downtown
The neighborhood is about 4 miles from Interstate 96, which leads to downtown Detroit in 17 miles. Residents can also reach the city’s center and surrounding area via Detroit Department of Transport buses, which offer stops along main thoroughfares like Warren Avenue and Telegraph Road.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
