Gladys Knight’s Detroit home
Once called home by the “Empress of Soul,” Martin Park is now a suburban neighborhood known for its well-maintained homes and its Catholic university—the largest in the state. On La Salle Avenue, the Gladys Knight House, where the soul legend herself once lived, is now a historic site that attracts fans far and wide. Between Fairfield Street and Livernois, the University of Detroit Mercy campus occupies a large swath of Martin Park. Besides this historic landmark and highly regarded Catholic university, Martin Park offers residents space from the lively atmosphere of downtown Detroit while sitting no more than eight miles from the city’s epicenter.
Martin Park is a small, tight-knit community located to the north of Detroit.

Two-story Colonial homes needing significant repair can sell for less than $20,000, while a fully renovated, more modern Colonial home can sell for $200,000. A well-maintained ranch home can sell for $45,000, but larger and more ornate Queen Anne-style homes can sell for less than $300,000. The median home price in Martin Park is $120,900. Long Realty Group real estate broker Jabari Long says the area is historic. “The homes are large,” he says, “and filled with older occupants with well-maintained properties.”

Detroit is known for being unsafe and full of crime, not just in the country, but throughout the world. Downtown area of Detroit is quite safe, but emergency services are still slow in times of need. The area I'm writing this review for is quite bad. On the UDM campus, there is public safety which is very reliable and efficient. Of campus, however, is unsafe to venture onto by yourself. If you do go off, you should go with a group of people and try to not hang around in the dark. Crimes have been committed in this area and police are slow, but if you use common sense, you should be fine in this area.

Downtown Detroit is a quick drive away and holds so many opportunities for employment. There are so many amazing hospitals in this area, as well as huge corporations. There are also theaters, sports stadiums, and many different restaurants ranging from small and convenient to expensive and extravagant.
