Life along the park
The stone and brick facades of West Outer Drive homes are attractive enough, but the neighborhood’s true appeal lies in its natural splendor. Rouge Park, Michigan’s largest urban park, cradles the east and south borders of the neighborhood, backdropping Outer Drive West and part of West Chicago with a canvas of pine and oak. Running through Rouge Park and West Outer Drive, Plymouth Road bisects the neighborhood and holds the strip of gas stations and small businesses, forming a small commercial zone. The few blocks north and south of Plymouth Road are lined with sidewalks and stocked with traditionally styled homes on tree-lined streets. “It’s a vibrant community with a rich history and welcoming vibe,” says Hassan Scheib, broker with Own It Realty. “It’s an ideal place for families, young professionals and retirees alike.”
Biking, swimming or hiking at Rouge Park
Founded in 1925, Rouge Park covers over 1,100 acres and holds six miles of paved paths, two outdoor pools, three miles of mountain biking trails and the 18-hole Rouge Park Golf Course. A stretch of the Rouge River runs through the center of the park, adding a natural waterway to the backdrop of lush and wooded Michigan land.
Bungalows and ranch homes
Home prices in West Outer Drive range from $58,000 for an 800-square-foot ranch-style home to $220,000 for a 1,500-square-foot bungalow. The median home price is $118,000, up three percent from the previous year. “West Outer Drive is a picturesque suburban area characterized by charming residential streets and well-kept homes,” says Hassan Scheib, broker with Own It Realty. “The neighborhood offers a mix of architectural styles, including bungalows, Colonial-style houses and ranch homes.”
Fresh from the farm at Rouge Park
“West Outer Drive neighbors Telegraph Road,” Scheib says. “And there are plenty of shopping centers along Telegraph. Right by the neighborhood, there’s an ALDI and a Starbucks on Telegraph.” Within the neighborhood, diners can enjoy Japanese-style hibachi at Yoshi Hibachi Grill or fresh pizza at Cottage Inn Pizza. Home cooks can also find fresh produce at D-Town Farm in Rouge Park or deli meats at Park to Shop Supermarket on North Telegraph Road.
Community celebrations and weekly yoga
To celebrate the work of nature-based community initiatives, Rhythm and Rouge Community Concert and Open Mic brings local artists, community members and musicians to Rouge Park for a night of music, food and prizes. The park also has weekly yoga classes and celebrations like a Cinco De Flores Walk for Cinco de Mayo.
Detroit Public Schools and an option for private
As part of the Detroit Public Schools Community District, West Outer Drive students can attend pre-kindergarten through 8th grade at Ann Arbor Trail Magnet School, which earns a C-minus on Niche. For 9th through 12th grades, students can enroll in classes at Cody High School, which offers an E-sports program and earns a C-minus. For families seeking a private school option, Westside Christian Academy is on the south end of the neighborhood, on Bramell.
Public Transit and interstate access
Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT) serves bus stops along Plymouth Road and Telegraph Road, connecting West Outer Drive residents with the city’s public transportation network. Buses don’t run along the strictly residential streets of the neighborhood, but those streets are lined with spacious sidewalks and easy to walk. Little more than a mile north of West Outer Drive, Interstate 96 connects drivers to downtown Detroit and the nation’s network of highways.
Criminal considerations
West Outer Drive’s overall CAP Index score is 5, just slightly higher than the national score of 4. This indicates that the overall risk of crime is average. However, the CAP Index score for homicide alone in West Outer Drive is 8.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
