A centrally located, countryside community

Curtin is a rural community in Drain, a city of about 1,000 residents. It’s the kind of place where cattle and horses roam on farmland, where people live on ranches and where they volunteer to serve in the local fire department. Interstate 5, which is about 15 minutes down Oregon Route 38, links the country community with larger cities and beaches. “You’re 45 minutes east from the Oregon coast, 45 minutes south from Eugene and 45 minutes north from Roseburg,” says Pearl Hergert Heaton, a Realtor with EXP Realty who has been selling homes in the area for nearly a decade. “It’s pretty well situated.”

People are often drawn to Curtin because of its small school district, Heaton says. The North Douglas School District serves about 300 students between two schools in the community. Umpqua Community College, known for its baseball team, is 35 miles away. There are no private schools in Curtin, but nearby churches include Drain Church of Christ and Gateway Family Fellowship. Gateway has a community food bank.

Carpenter Bypass Trail System is a hiking destination 10 miles north in Cottage Grove, which also has the public Hidden Valley Golf Course. The city of Drain is known as “The Gateway to the Pacific,” and is just about 50 miles from the coast. People visit to surf on the water and walk on the sand dunes.

Surrounded by succulents and colorful flowers, the house also hosts tours of its garden and tea times. Drain is also home to the North Douglas County Fair each July. People ride the Ferris wheel, play cornhole, watch entertainment like belly dancers and stuff their faces during the fair’s pie eating contest. “It’s a very close-knit community,” says Sheryll Barone, a Drain resident and operations manager for the North Douglas Fire Department. “People who live here have been here for a very long time.”

Oregon wildfire season

The area is prone to burning during wildfire season, which happens between July and October of every year.. The state insurance regulator requires wildfire coverage in every homeowners policy, and it is advised that people create a 30-ft. space around their homes for prevention.
