A small-town Mon Valley pocket

About 11 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, Dravosburg is a small community located by the Monongahela River. This Allegheny County borough was once an industrial town near multiple coal mines. Today, the narrow streets of this little community are full of character and historic charm. “Dravosburg has a steel-town feel,” says Kim Stotlemyer, a local Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty. “It was an industrial town, so it’s small and everyone knows everyone. There are a couple of local shops — not much for retail, it’s mostly residential — but West Mifflin is right there, so people can shop there.”

Early and midcentury charm in Dravosburg

Like many Mon Valley communities that sprung up with industrial growth, homes here sit close together on lots sized between a fifth- and tenth-acre. Some of these properties date back as far as 1900, and many more cropped up between the ‘20s and late ‘40s. These residences display classic architectural designs, including American Foursquares, shotgun-style houses and bungalows. Midcentury ranch-style homes are popular as well. List prices in Dravosburg range between $44,000 and $170,000. The median single-family-home price, $107,139, could afford a three-bedroom, two-bathroom home.

Ballfields by the Monongahela

While there aren’t any parks in Dravosburg, there are some ballfields along the Monongahela River where residents can practice their pitches. The trails and greenery of Dead Man’s Hollow Conservation Area aren’t far away either, just over 6 miles due southeast. “The Great Allegheny Passage is near Dravosburg,” says Stotlemyer. “It’s a 150-mile trail. Mr. Hoagie and Clancy’s Pub

Though Dravonsburg has its own post office and is home to a few local businesses, folks typically head to West Mifflin or another neighboring borough to run errands. The Village Shopping Center has Family Dollar, Shop ’n Save, Wine & Spirits and a laundromat nearby. Century III Plaza isn't far either and has larger chain stores for extensive restocking. Stores include The Home Depot, Giant Eagle, Aldi, Kohl’s and Marshalls. For some local Italian, you can head to Italian Village Pizza for more than just pizza. Big-box stores like Walmart Supercenter and Sam's Club can also be found in this commercial area, as can popular chain eateries, but residents don't have to head over to the mall to find a decent bite to eat. Having recently celebrated its 56th anniversary, Mr. Hoagie is a family-owned sandwich shop that many in Dravonsburg have been lifelong patrons of. Regional chain Italian Village Pizza has hot pies and a menu of eclectic fare, from gyros to wings. And when folks want to get a drink and catch a game, Clancy’s Pub is a trusty choice.
