Known as Halfway in 1924 and East Detroit in 1929, Eastpointe settled into its current name in 1992 after a push to distinguish itself from nearby Detroit, which lies 13 miles southwest. “Because it’s a smaller city, they also have agreements with Roseville and St. Clair Shores for things,” says Nicole Gatto-Ross, broker and owner of A Smart Move Realty in Eastpointe. This group effort, Gatto-Ross says, gives rise to efforts like the Recreation Authority of Roseville and Eastpointe, which oversees and maintains public parks in the neighboring cities. The city is also part of the metro area’s SMART bus system, connecting residents to the rest of the region and major employers such as General Motors, Ford and Stellantis.

Homes selling faster than the national average
Homes in Eastpointe were primarily built in the mid-1900s, and popular styles include bungalows, cottages and brick ranch-style homes. Gatto-Ross says that location and relatively low home prices are two of the biggest factors attracting homebuyers to Eastpointe. “Things are still moving quickly, but prices are holding steady,” she says. Small homes needing significant repair can sell as low as $60,000, while larger, more up-to-date homes can sell as high as $260,000. The median home price is $155,000, up 7% from the previous year. On average, Eastpointe homes spend 35 days on the market, 9 days below the national average of 44 days.

Eastpointe Community Schools District
The city’s students are served by the Eastpointe Community Schools District, which earns an overall grade of D on Niche. With just over 2,500 students, the district maintains a 20:1 student-teacher ratio. Schools in the district include four elementary schools, one middle school, one high school and one one virtual school. The district provides a before and after-school care program, open from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., for families with elementary school students who need extended childcare. Thanks to Michigan’s Schools of Choice program, students can opt to attend schools in nearby districts instead of their home districts.

Combating high crime in Metro Detroit
According to FBI data, Eastpointe’s violent crime rate trends significantly higher than Michigan and the US national average, often reaching more than double the national average. Property crime rates are also typically higher. To help reduce crime and promote safety, the city’s police department maintains vital relationships with community leaders and provides safety tips on its website. Environmental data from the website First Street indicates the city also faces minor flood risks and some concerns about air quality.
Military history and car culture
Other activities in the city include annual events like Cruisin’ Gratiot, a moving car show that features classic cars, awards and food from local vendors. As its name suggests, the show moves along Gratiot Avenue, and businesses join the festivities by offering special deals and official merchandise. The city is also home to the Michigan Military Technical & Historical Society, a museum showcasing military artifacts from World War I to the present day.
