The first female architect in El Paso
In 1916, Mabel Welch and her husband, Malcolm, moved to El Paso, where the two of them ran a contracting business, building homes in what was then a growing Texas border town. Originally, Malcolm designed and built the homes while Mabel designed and furnished the interiors; eventually, however, Malcolm fell ill and turned full control of the business to Mabel, making her the first female architect in El Paso and the second in the entire state. Many of her early 20th-century homes — including several in the Spanish Revival style she helped popularize — still stand in the Manhattan Heights neighborhood, a Central El Paso historic district with a quiet residential character and one of the city’s most popular parks.

Manhattan Heights’ Spanish Revival homes
Set along gridded streets, the brick and stucco homes of Manhattan Heights generally date back to the early 1900s. While styles vary from bungalow to Georgian Revival, the neighborhood’s status on the National Register of Historic Places is mainly tied to the Spanish Revival homes designed by Welch, which the El Paso Historic Preservation Society helps protect. Prices generally range from the mid-$200,000s to the mid-$600,000s for a well-maintained Spanish-style home or bungalow with a tiled roof and wrought iron ornamentation . Outside the historic district, houses start closer to the mid-$100,000s and require a bit more work. “It’s less of people moving into El Paso that buy here and more El Paso locals, history buffs and some military personnel looking to be a little closer to Fort Bliss,” says Antwann Woodley, Realtor with RE/MAX Associates.

Kiki’s Mexican and other businesses on Piedras
While Manhattan Heights mainly encompasses a residential area, the neighborhood’s few businesses tend to line Piedras Street. House of Pizza offers takeout and dine-in, with pastrami sandwiches alongside pepperoni pizzas. Further north on Piedras, Kiki’s Mexican — an El Paso staple — features machaca, a northern Mexican specialty made from dried beef cooked in its own juice. South of Manhattan Heights, the Five Points neighborhood also has plenty of bars and restaurants, like Joe Vinny and Bronson’s Bohemian Cafe. Small family-owned grocers like Bryant’s Market sit just outside the neighborhood, while residents can head east to the Bassett Place mall for more shopping.
Gussie's Bakery is home to mouthwatering pastries, breads, and genuine tamales.
