A countryside atmosphere just an hour west of Baltimore
Eldersburg, located in the rural expanse northwest of Baltimore, is a city of just over 30,000 that has a decidedly small-town feel. “So much of the appeal of Eldersburg comes from all the nearby amenities,” says Realtor Kathy Dixon of Blue Crab Real Estate, a resident of 26 years. “It’s between Piney Run Park and Liberty Reservoir, so there’s lots of outdoor activities, but that stretch of Liberty Road has really developed over the years into a nice little shopping district.” Because it is located 10 miles north of the Howard County Fairgrounds and has a mix of rural and suburban homes, the city has a countryside feel without being too far from suburban comforts.

Home prices in Eldersburg are rising
Eldersburg is primarily composed of subdivisions featuring sidewalks and plenty of shade trees. Homebuyers can expect to find midcentury designs like split-levels and ranch-style homes with neat yards and open driveways. While the median price sits around $525,000, the cost of larger homes in subdivisions or on the rural outskirts has risen significantly. “Until recently, housing in Eldersburg was much more affordable than neighboring regions,” Dixon says. “Prices are still below places like Howard County, but now you’re paying over $1 million for recent construction.”

Play at Piney Run Park and fish on the Liberty Reservoir
Eldersburg residents live between two expansive areas for outdoor recreation. Piney Run Park to the west is the smaller of the two. “Piney Run is a great place to kayak, whether you own one or want to rent,” Dixon says. “The trails there have really expanded since Covid, too, so it’s become popular with hikers, and there are even plans to add pickleball, or so I’ve heard.” The Liberty Reservoir to the east is larger and popular with local fishermen, as the lake is stocked with striped bass, white crappie and bluegill.

Shopping centers along Liberty Road and boutiques in downtown Sykesville
Liberty Road and Sykesville Road are the major shopping hubs for the area. For small-town shopping, locals can head south to Sykesville, which has a dozen stores in classic buildings on Main Street. “Lots of people make downtown Sykesville a weekend outing,” Dixon says. “But people don’t need to go far. It used to be that you left Eldersburg to eat a good meal. Now, they keep adding strip malls all along Route 26, so you can drive up and down it and get anything you want.” Grocery stores and big-box retailers line either side of the road, along with locally-owned restaurants and bars with live music patios.

Liberty Road and Route 32 are the major area connectors
Liberty Road, also known as Maryland Route 26, is the main thoroughfare, cutting through the center of the city and heading east to Baltimore. Route 97 also connects the community north to Westminster, while Route 32 provides the quickest access to Howard County destinations like Columbia and Ellicott City. While Eldersburg is primarily car-dependent, the Carroll Transit System offers fixed Trailblazer routes that stop in various locations throughout the county.
Close proximity to the Howard County and Carroll County Fairgrounds
Eldersburg sits just north of the site of the annual Howard County Fair, which takes place in early August and features animal auctions, horse shows and carnival rides. The Carroll County Fair takes place just north of town in late August, so residents can experience both throughout the month.
