A quiet, lakeside neighborhood
Developed in the 1960s and ‘70s along the shores of its namesake lake, East Lake is a suburban-style neighborhood of winding roads and cul-de-sacs. It's located midway between downtown Elkhart and the North Side industrial area, which helps the city lay claim to the distinction of “RV manufacturing capital of the world.” But the quiet neighborhood feels farther away from the din of downtown and the hum of factories than it is. “There’s just a lot of great family homes in that neighborhood with great yards. And low traffic,” says area resident Mark Krol. “And you have access to East Lake if you want to kayak or paddle.”
East Lake is a highly sought after neighborhood in the heart of Elkhart.

Comfortable homes, including some on the lakefront
The average East Lake house is just under 3,000 square feet with a spacious yard. There’s a mix of ranches, split-levels and two-story Traditional homes. Recent sales in the neighborhood range between $220,000-400,000, though that does not tell the full story. Lakefront houses on East Lake Drive and Twin Pines Point are valued at $400,000 and up, but rarely hit the market. These lakefront houses have docks in the backyard, though it is worth noting motorized boats are not permitted on East Lake.
Colonial style homes with beautiful landscaping can be found throughout East Lake.

A walk in the park at Walker Park
Walker Park is right across Bristol Street from the neighborhood. Beginning in fall 2024, the park will feature a playground with wheelchair accessibility and inclusive elements for children on the autism spectrum. Walker Park is, in fact, used by walkers — and joggers, and runners — thanks to a paved track that circles the park. Elkhart Public Library’s Osolo Branch is adjacent to the park, and families frequently visit both on the same trip.
Residents of East Lake will head to walker park to relax and read books.

Cobblestone Crossing convenience
Cobblestone Crossing shopping center, anchored by Martin’s Super Market and Martin’s Paw Mart, is a quick trip down Bristol Street from East Lake. Bristol is a mostly commercial corridor and features multiple restaurants, including Greek favorites — and barbecue ribs — at George’s Gyros, and Mexican ice creams and sweets at Aracely’s Paleteria. Local pizza chain Volcano Pizza also has a location just west of the neighborhood in the Poplar Court shopping center.
Family-friendly holiday events a highlight
Holidays are East Lake’s time to shine. “It’s the most festive neighborhood I've ever seen for Halloween,” Krol says. “We bring our kids to their grandma’s house in East Lake every Halloween. The way people decorate their yards, the amount of kids in the neighborhood — it's really something.” Kids are again the stars of the show for East Lake’s Fourth of July bike parade, which temporarily takes over the neighborhood streets on Independence Day.
A car-dependent neighborhood
East Lake is a highly car-dependent neighborhood, earning a Walk Score of 1 out of 100. The neighborhood is about 3 miles from downtown Elkhart and 4 miles from the Indiana Toll Road, which leads 110 miles to Chicago.
