Central New Jersey neighborhood with a growing community and a lot of history
Embedded within the interior of Central Jersey’s Monmouth County, the small town of Englishtown is a sleeping giant of New Jersey’s suburban growth. Its small size belies a major growth in population, and its location far from the beach is more than made up for by its proximity to the New Jersey Turnpike and the suburban tranquility that its seclusion offers. With abundant housing options for working residents and a significant selection of popular retirement communities, Englishtown offers much to homebuyers for extremely competitive home prices. Englishtown has a long history, as the town derives its name from the early colonist James English, and George Washington visited this town during the Revolutionary War. One of the town’s oldest buildings, the Village Inn, was built in 1728 and functioned as a tailor shop and tavern before becoming the headquarters of the Battleground Historical Society in 1978 and hosting historical-themed events. Englishtown was a local trading hub along the colonial highway for many years, but the more recent arrival of state highways and the New Jersey Turnpike enabled Englishtown to become a commuter town for both New York City and Philadelphia.

Variety of single-family homes along with some retirement communities
Englishtown’s relatively affordable median housing price has been a major factor in the town’s recent growth; the town’s population increased by 27% between 2010 and 2020. Homes come not only in a variety when it comes to style but in price as well. Ranch-style and split-level homes are common sell for between $260,000 and $800,000. Larger Colonial Revival and new-traditional homes are another popular option and go for between $800,000 and $1.7 million. Many neighborhoods in Englishtown house sidewalks, which connect homes on sizable lots. Like many communities in Central Jersey, Englishtown is also home to significant retirement communities. “Marlboro Greens and Covered Bridge are popular choices for active adults seeking a simpler lifestyle without having to move too far from their families,” Ted Koczon, a Realtor with eXp Realty says. “There’s a blend of different types of units, how many beds, and how many baths. There’s a plethora of different options, and they range between $200,000 and $350,000, with great amenities and accessibility to transportation.”

“Englishtown is centrally located, just off Route 9 and Route 18, and just minutes from the Garden State Parkway,” Koczon says. “There’s all kinds of shopping – Whole Foods, ShopRite, Home Depot, and all kinds of restaurants, bars and lounges.” Residents and visitors alike enjoy visiting the famous Aunt Butchies of Brooklyn, an Italian restaurant that specializes in fine dining-style pasta dishes from carbonara to ravioli, as well as Margherita pizzas. Englishtown’s shopping centers includes Marlboro Plaza – which includes a T.J. Maxx clothing store and a Livoti’s Italian market – as well as Cambridge Square, where shoppers can pick up groceries at ShopRite or enjoy Korean barbecue from Bulbap Grill. Highway 9 is lined with shopping centers and provides Englishtown residents with access to the major Garden State Parkway in the north.
