North Central Evergreen’s rural landscape and convenient access
Serving as the entryway to its namesake mountain, North Central Evergreen is a rural area located right off Interstate 70, about 8 miles north of downtown Evergreen. Thick forests with woodland trails foster an outdoor lifestyle. The area also has a small shopping center with stores and restaurants that provide for the surrounding single-family homes. “It’s a really special place to call home. It has the small-town feel that people like, and you really get the Colorado lifestyle of being in the mountains, but you’re only 30 to 40 minutes from all that Denver has to offer,” says Real Estate Agent Emily Henderson with LIV Sotheby’s International Realty, who has over 12 years of experience and grew up in Evergreen.
Surrounded by mountain trails and additional recreation
Numerous opportunities for outdoor recreation sit between North Central Evergreen and downtown. “The hiking in and around Evergreen is fantastic. There’s no shortage of trail systems and open spaces,” Henderson says. Fillius Park is about 2 miles southwest of the neighborhood and has two looped hiking trails and a picnic area, while Bergen Park connects to the Jefferson County Pioneer Trail and is known for its historic stone shelter. The Buchanan Park Recreation Center is close by with a climbing wall, indoor pool and weight room. There’s also the Hiwan Golf Club, which has a private 18-hole course, plus tennis and pickleball courts. Evergreen Mountain itself is about 8 miles from North Central Evergreen and has a 6-mile out-and-back trail to the summit. At its base, where mountain meets downtown, is Evergreen Lake. In the summer, kayaking and paddleboarding are allowed. Once the lake freezes over, visitors can go ice skating or play hockey and broomball.
Winding roads of single-family homes, estates and townhouses
Homes in North Central Evergreen are dotted along winding country roads on the mountainside, with large lots of land surrounded by tall trees. Raised ranchers and bi-level homes are common, built between the 1960s and 1980s. Many of these properties have cabin-inspired architecture, such as wood exteriors and wrap-around balconies. Prices range from $825,000 to $1 million. Multi-story mountain homes and Craftsman-inspired estates are also found throughout the area with stone accents, floor-to-ceiling picture windows and a back deck or balcony. These properties cost anywhere between $1.1 million and $2.8 million, depending on property size. Closer to the interstate, there are newer subdivisions with modern multi-story townhouses built in the late 2010s. These houses share a geometric design, come with attached garages and go for $1 million to $1.2 million.
Evergreen’s nearby shops, restaurants and grocery stores
A commercial center along Swede Gulch Road is the area’s main hub for shopping and dining. There’s a Walmart Supercenter, Home Depot and a handful of other small businesses like Evergreen Bicycle Outfitters. Smiling Moose is a build-your-own sandwich shop, and Kalaka Mexican Kitchen serves modern takes on traditional Mexican dishes. Fast-food options include McDonald’s and Qdoba. The Evergreen Farmers Market takes place across the street on Tuesdays during the warmer months. About 2 miles south along Evergreen Parkway, the Marketplace at Bergen Park has a King Soopers and Natural Grocers. The Bergen Village Shopping Center is nearby with multiple local shops like Mountain Daisy, which sells women’s clothing. Evergreen Bread & Cocktail Lounge is an upscale bakery and cafe serving sandwiches with fresh ingredients. For more options, downtown Evergreen is even farther south with a selection of restaurants, coffee shops, wineries and breweries. “Evergreen has everything you need for a day-to-day basis, which increases the community feel and ease of access,” Henderson says
Driving along Evergreen’s highways and country roads
A vehicle is required to navigate North Central Evergreen’s rural landscape and winding country roads. Interstate 70 travels east to west through the area and can take commuters the 21 miles into Denver. U.S. Route 40 and Colorado state Route 74, known as Evergreen Parkway, both branch off I-70, with CO-74 heading south into downtown Evergreen. The Denver International Airport is roughly 44 miles away.
A-rated Jeffco public and charter schools
Families living in North Central Evergreen can send their children to schools in the Jefferson County School District, which has choice enrollment. Bergen Elementary and Evergreen Middle School both earn A-minus grades from Niche. Students can take electives in theater, visual arts and woodworking at the middle school. Rocky Mountain Academy of Evergreen is a charter school in the area that also has an A-minus and teaches kindergarten through eighth grade. From there, students can attend Evergreen High School, which receives an A grade and offers over 30 student clubs and 26 sports programs.
The environmental challenges of mountain living
With the area’s thick forests and grassy plains, North Central Evergreen has a risk of potential wildfires. As such, the Foothills Fire Protection District’s Rainbow Hills Fire Station is located in the neighborhood for emergency fire and medical services. There’s also the Alpine Rescue Team next door. In the winter months, the area gets about 65 inches of snowfall, which is on par with the state’s annual average. “The biggest challenge is the length of winter – it adds a month on both sides – but everything is well taken care of. The roads are maintained, and people know how to drive,” Henderson says.
