A vibrant hub for the waterfront town of Fairfield
Fairfield Center is the dynamic core of Fairfield, a coastal Connecticut town known for its sandy beaches, well-rated school system and central location on the Gold Coast. Locals live off peaceful, residential streets, but many are within walking distance of the town’s commercial corridor. Post Road is a walkable stretch of restaurants and small businesses, where the community goes out to dinner or attends concerts at local venues. Students from Fairfield University, a private college located just north of the neighborhood, add youthful energy to the neighborhood.

Eateries and retailers on Post Road
Post Road is lined with a diverse mix of restaurants, stores and entertainment venues, all of which are housed in colonial-inspired buildings. “We have lots of different restaurants. I always say we’re too far to get to New York City to go out to eat, so all the good restaurants have to come to us,” says Pam Toner, a real estate agent with Berkshire Hathaway New England Properties and longtime Fairfield County resident. In the morning, locals can grab an iced latte and muffin from Shearwater Coffee Bar or order an acai bowl from Playa Bowls. There are several pizzerias in the area, including Molto and Sophie’s Pizza Bar. For a more elevated dinner with cocktails, residents go to Malibu, a trendy, modern eatery serving rice bowls and tacos. Mecha Noodle Bar is another popular spot that serves pho, bao buns and boba tea. Community members buy groceries at Stop & Shop and apparel and home goods at retailers like Marshalls, Loft and Chico’s.

Children in Fairfield Center attend schools that all earn A ratings from Niche. They can begin at Riverfield Elementary School and advance to Roger Ludlowe Middle School. Older students may progress to Fairfield Ludlowe High School, which offers the chance to take college classes in high school through the UConn Early College Experience program. Fairfield University, a private Jesuit school with about 5,000 undergraduate students, is just north of the neighborhood. “The university’s bookstore is in an old Barnes & Noble on Post Road. It’s the same deal as it was before, except there’s a Starbucks where students congregate, and Fairfield University merch in there, too,” Toner says. Another private college in Fairfield is Sacred Heart University, a Catholic college with almost 7,000 undergraduate students that’s about 8 miles north of the neighborhood.

Local venues and town-sponsored events in Fairfield
Fairfield Center hosts a couple of venues where community members gather for events. Bands frequently take the stage at The Warehouse at Fairfield Theater Company, a painted brick venue with an edgy, industrial vibe that can seat 640 audience members. Sacred Heart University purchased, renovated and reopened the Fairfield Community Theatre on Post Road, where locals can attend comedy shows, musical performances and film showings. The town of Fairfield also organizes seasonal events. “The Memorial Day parade is a big deal here. People will start reserving their spot on the route with lawn chairs on the Friday before the Monday parade,” Toner says. She says that the Independence Day fireworks display, which is lit from a barge on the Long Island Sound, is another highly anticipated event. Residents often watch the fireworks sparkle over the water from Penfield or Jennings Beach.

Beaches and walking trails near Fairfield Center
Fairfield Center has a couple of pocket parks, like Jennings Park, where people can sit on benches on landscaped lawns. However, the most popular outdoor recreation options are along the coast. Most residents are under 2 miles from the largest beach in Fairfield. At Jennings Beach, racks of colorful canoes brighten the sandy landscape, and beachgoers are often found swimming, fishing from the pier or watching their kids run around the nearby playground. There’s also Penfield Beach, a smaller stretch of sand where people also swim and lounge. Both beaches require parking stickers during the summer, but season passes are $25 for residents with a vehicle registered in Fairfield.
In the neighborhood, people can hang out at the Fairfield Public Library, which has film showings and crafts for kids, book and game clubs for teenagers, and creative workshops for adults. To take nature walks or go fishing in a more wooded atmosphere, there's Perry’s Mill Ponds, a network of waterways along the Mill River.
