Farrell is a small neighborhood on the Ohio-Pennsylvania border that serves as the industrial center of the Shenango Valley. Most residents are hard-working employees of the large factories and corporations located on the neighborhood's west side. While Farrell is primarily known as an industrial mecca, almost 2,000 single-family homes line the residential streets on the other side of M.L.K. Jr. Boulevard. These affordable older homes are occupied by dedicated community leaders and residents who are continuously working to improve the area through youth programs and community events.
Low-cost single-family homes
American Foursquares and stick homes built in the early 1900s are tightly packed along the grid-like streets in Farrell. Riddled concrete stairways lead to spacious front porches shaded by low-pitched gable roofs. Paved driveways and two-car detached garages provide residents ample private parking at the back of homes. Some ranch-style homes were built between the 1950s and 1970s on the east side of Farrell. These single-family homes extend across quarter-acre lawns and offer paved driveways with attached one-car garages. Most homes in this neighborhood feature three bedrooms and list between $40,000 and $85,000. However, some single-family ranch-style homes can cost around $125,000.

Farrell Area Schools receive a C rating or higher from Niche and provide free meals to all students
Farrell Area Schools receive a C rating or higher from Niche and provide free meals to all students. Children may start pre-k at Farrell Area Elementary School. Fifth through ninth graders can go on field trips, learn about health and wellness and go on field trips through Farrell Area School's free after-school program. In seventh grade, students can transition to Farrell Area High School, which receives a B for diversity on Niche. Upperclassmen with a 3.0 GPA or higher can take college classes at Butler Community College through the school's dual enrollment program.

Farrell offers a free recreational program from June through August to help children stay active over the summer while their parents are at work. Through the Summer Playground Program, kids can receive free lunch, take field trips to local playgrounds, or enjoy indoor activities at the Stey-Nevant Public Library. Buhl Park is less than 15 minutes from Farrell and offers the nation's only free public golf course. At this massive park, locals can go fishing for trout in Lake Julia or take their furry friends to play on the obstacle course at the dog park.

Bargain grocery stores and family-owned restaurants
Saber's Market and Deli is a local corner store where residents can purchase select groceries and household items. This small business has a full-service deli counter with homemade gyros and other made-to-order sandwiches. Across the Shenango Valley Freeway, Save-A-Lot is a discount grocery store with deals on fresh produce and pantry staples. Farrell residents can drive to Hermitage for fast-food dining and big-box stores. A collection of family-owned restaurants and hole-in-the-wall dive bars can be found scattered across the neighborhood.

Farrell hosts the county's National Night Out
To fight against local crime, Farrell hosts the community's National Night Out starting at 7 pm on the first Tuesday in August. This annual event is intended to strengthen the relationship between neighbors and local law enforcement by bringing the community together in a carnival-type atmosphere. Children can play on bounce houses and watch safety demonstrations. At the same time, other residents eat classic festival food with their neighbors and local law enforcement.
Highways separate residences from local industrial plants
M.L.K. Jr. Boulevard runs along the west side of Farrell, separating the neighborhood's residential streets from the large industrial plants that employ most local residents. This major road leads to Interstate 376, which connects the area to Pittsburgh in about 70 miles. In the neighborhood, UPMC Hospital serves the Shenango Valley community and offers a full-service emergency room.

If you were to ask me this question three years ago, I would of told you that it was a very safe place. But, now I would tell you it is getting bad, very bad. I say that because in 2016 alone there have been at least six or seven shootings. Then to add to the violence there has been a number of drug raids that turned up empty, so there is still a high chance that there are drugs out there.

It's a very small town. There's not much to do. It can be depressing. The only really good thing about it is that it can be family oriented if you have relatives here. People tend to look out for one another.
