Suburban Neighborhood in Birmingham, Alabama
Jefferson County 35005, 35214, 35224
If quiet, country living away from the bustle of city life appeals to you, Forestdale might be the place to put down roots. This unincorporated community, northwest of Downtown Birmingham, lives up to its name with its tree-covered, rolling green landscape. It’s sandwiched between Adamsville and North Pratt on the outskirts of Birmingham, along U.S. 78.
You’ll find a lot of older homes in the area, including cottage-style houses, split-levels, recent New Traditional builds and ranch-style houses with cross-gabled and hipped roofs. Depending on where you live, houses might be raised or built on (or into) the hillsides to accommodate the rolling landscape. You might also have some acreage separating you from your neighbor. You’ll definitely need a car to get around, because there aren’t sidewalks or public transportation available. Closing sale prices for recent listings range from $75,000 for an older, cottage-style house in need of work, to $456,000 for a ranch-style house with a barn on several acres of land. In general, houses less than $100,000 will need some love and care. Currently, newly constructed homes are priced around $300,000.
Students can attend Minor Community School or U.W. Clemon Elementary for Kindergarten through 5th Grade, and then go on to Minor Middle School and Minor High School. Each of these schools are a short drive away, about 10 minutes or less. Minor Middle offers clubs like Drama, and Robotics, where students can design, build and program robots, and enter competitions. Minor High is part of the Western Zone Jefferson County Schools Signature Academies, which gives students the opportunity to enroll in a career-specific program like Advanced Manufacturing and Biomedical Science.
You’ll find plenty of shopping and dining options along U.S. 78. Get your groceries at the Piggly Wiggly in the Village Hills Shopping Center, Ollie’s Bargain Outlet or Walmart Supercenter. There are also small specialty shops, like Tienda Mexicana Teresita. Pick out a new outfit at clothing stores like Citi Trends or Rainbow Shops. If you have a four-legged friend, you can rest easy knowing that Westwood Animal Hospital is easily accessible on this road.
When you’re in the mood for tasty traditional Mexican food, stop by El Vecino Mexican Restaurant and order dishes like tacos, enchiladas or chicken fajitas. Kings Wings offers chicken wings served in a variety of sauces from savory to spicy, and fries. Satisfy your sweet tooth at Margaret’s Bakery, where you can order cookies, fine pastries and beautiful, custom-designed cakes, or grab a chicken salad sandwich for lunch.
Spend time outdoors at Forestdale Community Park. Kids can climb on the playground or enjoy the swing set, while you relax under the pavilion or get your steps in on the walking trail. There are also basketball courts and tennis courts, if you want to play a game with a friend. Head northwest into Adamsville, and you’ll reach the playground at Adamsville Blackwell Park or the playground, splash pad and disc golf course at Spring Street Park in about 10 minutes. Past Spring Street Park on Dogwood Road is the Adamsville Bark Park, where you can let your dog loose to play and run around. If you’re a bookworm, pick up your next read at the Adamsville Public Library. The library might be on the small side, but you can request any books you aren’t able to find.
In Forestdale, you get a slice of country-living just 15 minutes away from the entertainment and excitement of Downtown Birmingham.
