Luxe living and shopping in a central Fort Myers neighborhood

In the heart of Fort Myers, The Forum is a mixed-use development known primarily for its collection of retail and restaurants. The growing neighborhood is anchored by its namesake shopping center, where surrounding communities come to shop, eat and socialize. Forum Boulevard runs through the community, and apartment complexes and gated communities branch off of the busy roadway. “There’s a lot of cool stuff happening where The Forum is built,” says Chad Damitz, Realtor and founder of AnchorPoint Real Estate. “That whole area is really growing, especially getting into Lehigh Acres farther east.” Much of that growth is concentrated along Colonial Boulevard and Six Mile Cypress Parkway, although another major project is in the works: Amazon purchased more than 100 acres just north of The Forum, with plans to build a 750,000-square-foot fulfillment center and warehouse that will create more than 1,000 jobs.

Shopping and dining at The Forum

The Forum is one of Fort Myers’ best-known shopping centers. Its mix of big-box stores, shops and casual restaurants pairs with services like salons, medical offices and a bank. Restaurants are sprinkled throughout The Forum, mostly chains such as Buffalo Wild Wings, Five Guys and Firehouse Subs. Baked, a Chicago-style pizzeria, opened in 2019 after the owner, like many Midwesterners, migrated to Florida in search of warmer weather. There’s also 3 Pepper Burrito Company, a southwest Florida chain serving burritos, bowls and quesadillas. Locals can grab essentials at Target, but most head to Publix for groceries less than 3 miles away. New restaurants and shops have cropped up along Six Mile Cypress Parkway, another bustling corridor with fast-casual franchises, Kohl’s and Hobby Lobby.

Gated Spanish Mission-style homes and townhouses

Most residences in The Forum are less than 20 years old, and apartments make up more than 50% of the property mix. Still, there are ample single-family homes and townhouses available. No matter the neighborhood, residents can expect sidewalks, palm trees and green lawns. In The Colonnade subdivision, for instance, Spanish Mission-style townhomes come with attached single-car garages, with prices ranging from $250,000 to $350,000. Monthly HOA fees vary between $330 and $400 in the gated community that includes amenities like a resort-style pool, a clubhouse, a fitness center, a tennis court and a playground. Meanwhile, the gated communities of Promenade East and Promenade West offer Mediterranean or Spanish Mission-style single-family homes. Ranch-style homes are most common, but two-story properties are also available. Miniature lakes dot the community, and some homes have views of the water. A few properties have lanais — enclosed outdoor spaces attached to the home — including some big enough to house a saltwater pool. Prices in these communities range from $400,000 to $765,000, but most homes sell for under $600,000. Monthly HOA fees are just shy of $400.

Colonial Boulevard is getting a ‘diverging diamond’

Directly outside The Forum, the Diverging Diamond Interchange is one of several major infrastructure projects throughout Fort Myers. Slated for completion in 2025, the unique traffic design will reduce wrecks and keep traffic flowing. “There are actually four separate projects going on in that area," says Mayor Kevin Anderson. "All of these have some benefit on helping traffic move a little bit quicker.” In the meantime, some locals complain about the heavy congestion and changing traffic patterns. While there are bus stops on Forum Boulevard and Champion Ring Road, most residents drive. Southwest Florida International Airport is about 12 miles away, and medical care is available at Lee Memorial Hospital, about 7 miles away.

Buckingham Community Park and Calusa Nature Center

Sidewalks run throughout The Forum, connecting subdivisions and the shopping center. Miniature ponds in some communities offer a serene natural landscape. In lieu of a neighborhood park, The Forum has a fitness court on Champion Ring Road. The covered area has equipment and recommended exercises for a quick workout. The Forum is also home to Sky Zone, a trampoline park with obstacle courses, dodgeball and foam pits for family-friendly fun. Golf courses are everywhere in Fort Myers, and The Forum is close to the public courses of Eastwood Golf Course and The Club at Westminster, as well as members-only Colonial Country Club. Topgolf is also just down Colonial Boulevard. Buckingham Community Park is about 4 miles away and has sports fields, including four baseball fields for Buckingham Little League, plus a playground and a dog park. Primitive trails and a small lake offer space for walking, hiking and biking through the park’s natural landscape. There’s also the Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium, a 105-acre green space with nature trails, educational programs, a raptor aviary, a butterfly garden and a planetarium theater about 2 miles from The Forum.

School choice in Lee Country Public Schools

Lee County Public Schools serves The Forum. Kids may attend Ray V. Pottorf Elementary School, which receives a B-minus from Niche, followed by Paul Laurence Dunbar Middle School, which receives a B. Florida has school choice, meaning high schoolers can rank which school they’d like to attend within their attendance zone. For instance, Lehigh Senior High School receives a B-plus and offers an arts program as well as the Cambridge Program, where students can earn an Advanced International Certificate of Education, comparable to Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses. High schoolers could also attend B-rated Riverdale High School, which offers the International Baccalaureate program. The Fort Myers branches of Keiser University and Rasmussen University are popular among nursing students.
