Scenery and amenities a few miles from Downtown Fort Wayne

Cambridge Oaks is an eastern Fort Wayne community with eclectic housing options. Homes, condominiums, apartments and a retirement community are all here. Those who settle in Cambridge Oaks are between two crossroads, which can take them in every cardinal direction. “Cambridge Oaks is a desirable neighborhood because it’s close to so much, and it’s a gorgeous area,” says Realtor Michelle Wyatt of Wyatt Group Realtors. “The neighborhood doesn’t have a lot of amenities, but it’s easy to get to shopping or restaurants.” A nearby nature reserve fills the need for outdoor recreation. Residents are also a 3-mile drive from Interstate 469, while Citilink buses connect to downtown.

A variety of housing types and styles

Renters and retirees have as much reason to settle in Cambridge Oaks as a family looking for a classic three-bedroom home. This is because Cambridge Oaks’ residential streets vary, with the northern half featuring a collection of new construction, condos, an apartment complex and a retirement community. The southern half more resembles the suburban streets of other Fort Wayne communities. Homes in the neighborhood tend to be built in the ranch and split-level styles. Buyers can expect to find four-bedroom homes for between $185,00 and $350,000. Wyatt says that renovations and expansions are becoming more prevalent, "which tends to mean prices will go up, too.” Condos on the north end sell between $215,000 and $250,00.

Wood fired pizzas and pantry stockers

When it’s time to stock up on groceries, residents can head to either Target or Kroger, each 2 miles north or south of the neighborhood, respectively. Discount stores and pharmacies are also close at Northwood Plaza and the Georgetown Square shopping center. Northcrest Shopping Center, about 5 miles away, includes a deeper selection of stores such as Dick’s Sporting Goods, Best Buy and Kohl’s. Casa Grille Italiano is a local favorite, where diners have their choice of traditional Italian favorites or wood-fired pizza. Fans of Mexican cuisine head to family-owned Casa Grande.

Nature parks and trails all around

There are no parks in Cambridge Oaks, so residents looking for a playground for their children will have to drive a bit. Bristers Springs Park is the nearest, about a mile-and-a-half from the neighborhood. This small park offers access to a playground and some open space. For a more comprehensive spot, there’s Kreager Park, offering visitors access to a playground, a seasonal-use splash pad, tennis courts, soccer and softball fields and a mile-long walking path with fitness stations. Keeping fit is convenient, with both a Planet Fitness and a Catalyst Fitness within a mile of the neighborhood. When the treadmill gets repetitive, residents can head to the 47-acre Mengerson Nature Reserve for a walk. The area lies between two suburbs, making it small for an outdoor reserve, but this doesn’t deter the residents of Cambridge Oaks from exploring it just a mile and a half from home.

Taking the Citilink bus into town lasts about 50 minutes, depending on traffic, though the nearest stop is a half-mile west. A lawsuit over PFAs

Fort Wayne has had issues with PFAs, or “forever chemicals,” in its environment dating back more than 50 years. In July 2024, the city sued multiple local companies for their role in the disposal of these harmful chemicals. Although the drinking water is not affected, testing for the presence of these PFAs elsewhere costs the city nearly $10,000 a year.
