Residents tend to stay in this convenient suburb

Eight miles northeast of downtown Fort Wayne, Hillsboro has a certain hold on those who live there. “People who come here tend to stay here — many even grew up here and come back,” says Jane Yoder, a Fort Wayne Realtor with RE/MAX Results. “I’ve seen young families stay in a house in this neighborhood for 20 years.” A variety of housing styles and nearby shopping, dining and parkland account a lot of the attraction, she said. The Hillsboro addition, built between 1979 and 1983, comprises the neighborhood’s single-family homes and most of its real estate. Condos can be found at the Communities of Chadwick, a small complex built in the 1990s. The newest addition, Rothman Villas, began building duplex- and ranch-style villas in 2019. So even when life changes prompt a change in housing needs, a short move within the neighborhood is often possible.

Walking trails meander through the neighborhood

In addition to each development’s parks and playgrounds, walking trails connect Hillsboro’s communities. Shoaff Park, 2 miles east on the St. Joseph River, has 4 miles of trails and a large playground with a rock-climbing wall and splash pad. Shoaff Park includes an 18-hole, par-3 golf course. Just to the north, Riverbend's regulation golf course is open to the public, and Cherry Hill's private course is 2 miles east. When cold weather hits, residents trade trails for workouts at the Iron Society Gym across Maplecrest Road or enjoy family activities at the nearby Jackson R. Lehman YMCA.

Shopping centers line Maplecrest Road

Maplecrest Road on Hillsboro’s western edge is the nearest commercial corridor. Friends catch up at Bon’s Coffee or grab a drink from Kroger’s in-house Starbucks while grocery shopping. Farther down Maplecrest Road is the Northwood Plaza shopping center, home to Target, Walgreens, Dollar Tree and Pet Supplies Plus. Restaurants are plentiful—Pizza King offers quick dinners for pick-up, and Shigs in Pit BBQ & Brew has won 11 Kansas City Barbecue Society Grand Championships for its house-made barbeque.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
