Life next to a shopping center and nature reserve
Eastern Fort Wayne has no shortage of suburbs built around thoroughfares, but few are so directly linked to shopping centers as Maplewood. Despite a name hinting at a unique wooded enclave, the neighborhood’s actual standout feature is the short distance to big-box stores and restaurants. “Walkability,” says Realtor Andrea Gates of Coldwell Banker Real Estate Group. “You’ve got Planet Fitness, Target and the grocery store right there.” Stellhorn Road runs through the area, giving residents easy access to Highway 24 and Interstate 469. While there are no parks in the neighborhood, Maplewood residents are closer than most to the Mengerson Nature Reserve, a kind of out-of-place hiking destination amid suburbia.
Ranch-styles and condominium communities
Maplewood’s pattern of winding residential streets is consistent with many other suburbs on the outskirts of Fort Wayne, except for the two shopping centers they encircle. Cul-de-sacs of neatly spaced homes brush against the commercial hub on three sides, emphasizing walkability to these hotspots. A collection of split-level and ranch-style homes line the streets, featuring private driveways, attached garages and spacious yards. “They do have a variety of characteristics and features, and don’t all look the same,” says Gates. Homes in the area were mostly built between the 1960s and 1980s, with prices ranging from $135,000 to $275,000. Condominiums are also available, comprising several subdivisions including Maplewood Downs, Maplewood Gardens and Maplewood Terrace.

Shopping in Northwood and Maplewood Plazas
Nature gives way to commerce on Stellhorn Road, with a shopping center on either side of the street. Target-anchored Northwood Plaza is the place to go for groceries as well as prescriptions, thanks to its integrated CVS Pharmacy. Facing directly opposite is Maplewood Plaza, which features Big Lots and various smaller businesses. Residents might stop for a meal at Casa Grille Italiano, a family-owned eatery serving Italian cuisine and wood-fired pizzas. A quick half-mile drive north reveals the Kroger-anchored Georgetown Square shopping center. This area has its share of unique restaurants like Shigs in Pit Barbecue.

A day outdoors at the reserve or Kreager Park
Young people and adults alike enjoy the Jackson R. Lehman Family YMCA, located a few minutes west of the neighborhood. The facility offers exercise classes, cooking classes and swimming lessons to members of the community. Getting outdoors is just as easy with the nearby Mengerson Nature Reserve, tucked between the shopping centers and an adjacent community. Visitors can hike along wooded paths and take in the different stages of the forest, from the open meadow to the mature forest of sugar maple, beech, oak, shagbark and shellbark hickory trees. A few minutes south of Maplewood is Kreager Park, where locals can get active on the playground, splash pad, tennis courts and soccer fields.

Access to Highway 24 and Interstate 469
Like most eastern Fort Wayne neighborhoods, Maplewood is just far enough away from downtown to require a longer commute. Stellhorn Road runs through the area, giving residents easy access to Highway 24 and Interstate 469. Residents can make the 7-mile trip downtown in about 15 minutes, or 35 minutes if they opt for the Citilink bus. Fort Wayne International Airport is reachable in just under half an hour via a 15-mile drive to the southwest end of the city.
Concerns over PFAs
In July 2024, the city of Fort Wayne filed suit against several companies that, over the past several decades, were found to have introduced PFAs into the environment. These “forever chemicals” did not affect the drinking water, but their lasting presence meant the consistent need for testing, which cost the city an estimated $10,000 annually.
