Franklin community built around historic battle site
Franklin’s Carnton community revolves around the large Federal and Greek Revival estate located on the edge of Eastern Flank Battlefield Park. This open field was the site of the Civil War's Battle of Franklin and the Carnton plantation home served as a field hospital during the conflict. Suburban developments have since taken over the former plantation and the land surrounding the Antebellum-era home. Today, both residents and tourists enjoy visiting the field and its cemetery, where the rows of protruding block-shaped gravestones give the appearance that the buried soldiers are still in formation, readying to march toward downtown Franklin. “People can come to the city park, walk through the battlefield and read the signs. The communities sort of connect to each other with a path, which is nice as well,” says Kristi Farrow, the director of African and African-American History with the Battle of Franklin Trust, the nonprofit organization that manages the Carnton house. “I love the community. I think Franklin itself is a surreal place to live. It has this amazing little hometown vibe.”
Contemporary Traditionals and Colonials with stylish touches
The Carnton Lane and Carriage Park communities sit on either side of the battlefield park. Carnton Lane is the more upscale of the two and has many Colonial Revival homes, several of which feature Greek-style columns and roofs with saltbox and Mansard designs. A grassy median splits the Carnton Lane roadway which is shaded by a tall and mature tree canopy. Carriage Park mainly consists of townhouses and condos with small parking lots in front of the buildings. Elsewhere, the Carnton area has subdivisions that feature contemporary brick Traditionals on lots no larger than a quarter acre. Single-family homes with footprints between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet make up most of the housing throughout the neighborhood, and they will cost between $650,000 and $820,000. The largest homes can surpass $1 million.

Walking the old war grounds and canoeing the Harpeth River
The 110-acre Eastern Flank Battlefield Park is a result of the city’s ongoing efforts to reclaim its former battlegrounds and preserve its historic landmarks. “We put a big emphasis on preservation. We don’t tear down history. We build up history, and we’ve gone the extra mile to say, ‘let’s tell the full story of our community,” says Franklin Councilwoman Beverly Burger. “We’re an authentic town, and we’re authentic about our history.” The Carnton house hosts tours for those curious about its history; while a canoe launch borders the old battlefield, giving water sports enthusiasts a starting point for adventures down the Harpeth River. Nearby, Pinkerton Park has a wooden, castle-style structure called the Tinkerbell Playground, and visitors can walk the park’s trails, enjoying nature and a mural inspired by the Tennessee state flag. Avid golfers enjoy playing rounds on the Franklin Bridge Golf Club’s championship and public 18-hole course.
