About Godfrey, IL

Small-town vibe in Godfrey

Godfrey is a village of 17,000 residents that elicits a small-town vibe through its collection of homegrown businesses. As an example Tarrant & Harman Realtor Jenny Wisniewski points to Bakers & Hale, a locally owned restaurant that boasts its freezer is the size of a residential ice box. With no industrial freezer to stock, Bakers & Hale instead relies on fresh ingredients, including peppers, zucchinis and basil pulled from the eatery’s backyard garden. Elsewhere in Godfrey residents dine on garden salads next to the cozy fireplace of Josephine’s Tea Room, a local lunch spot and boutique open since the ‘70s. These establishments fill out the character of Godfrey, ranked by Niche in the top 20% of the best Illinois communities to buy a house.

Homes with views of the Mississippi

Cruise through Godfrey’s residential areas, and you’ll see subdivisions filled with brick ranch homes and split-level houses, as well as neo-colonials with expansive patios perched among the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River. Two- and three-bedroom homes start in the low $100,000s, with two-bedroom new construction houses priced in the mid $200,000s. Prices for three- and four-bedroom homes in sought-after, secluded subdivisions typically run in the mid $300,000s to the mid $400,000s. Wisniewski says inventory is tight, which is underscored by the fact that the Godfrey area has less than a month’s supply of homes on the market.

Soccer and walking trails Glazebrook Park

Godfrey is home to six parks, with Glazebrook Park being the largest. Its 3 miles of walking trails wind around the sandy banks of the park’s lake and past its four soccer fields. The fall is an ideal time to come by, not only because the scarlet and amber leaves of the trees reflect over the blue surface of the lake, but also because the season marks the opening of the Great Godfrey Maze. When the maze opens for September and October evenings, guests break out flashlights and trek through the stalks. The maze every year is blazed into an elaborate design visible from above, from popular board games to the poster for the Broadway musical “Wicked.”
