An older neighborhood with a diverse feel
Located just north of the railroad tracks from downtown Goshen, Chamberlain is one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods. For that reason – most houses were built when cars were a novelty – it's also one of Goshen’s most walkable neighborhoods. And though many of the neighborhood’s homes are over 100 years old, the people who live in them reflect modern-day Goshen – a multicultural city where many have arrived to take advantage of abundant economic opportunities. “It’s a diverse neighborhood within walking distance to Chamberlain Elementary School,” says Hannah Scott-Carter, community relations manager with the City of Goshen.
Chamberlain Elementary serves community needs
Chamberlain Elementary is the nucleus of its namesake neighborhood and operates under a mission statement that its “socioeconomically and ethnically diverse student population is a wonderful microcosm of the world.” Niche ranks Chamberlain as one of the 300 most diverse public elementary schools in Indiana and gives the school an overall C-plus rating. In fifth grade, students move on to Goshen Intermediate before moving on to B-rated Goshen Junior High in seventh grade. B-plus rated Goshen High School serves the entire city.
Housing styles date back more than a century
Chamberlain’s housing, like its population, is diverse. Many houses in the neighborhood were built around 1900, and include bungalow, Foursquare and American Traditional styles. But there are also an increasing number of newer houses built on these long-established lots. Ranch-styles built from the 1980s to the present are interspersed with their much older neighbors. “In Goshen, we've blended in well with the infill and reconstruction of some homes,” says Nick Kieffer, president and CEO of the Goshen Chamber of Commerce. “People are very mindful of the historic nature of the architecture while trying to push the edge to the future.” Prices in the neighborhood range from $115,000 to just under $260,000.
Bungalows with unique landscaping are common throughout Chamberlain.
Chamberlain homes can often be found with covered front porches.

Menudos La China a hidden gem
Goshen doesn’t lack for highly rated Mexican restaurants, and one of the most popular sits in an unassuming brick building in an otherwise residential part of Chamberlain. Menudos La China, housed in a space that was once a laundromat, is known for the signature item in its name – menudo, or tripe soup. The restaurant also features authentic taco toppings like birria, barbacoa and lamb. Nearby grocery stores include San Jose Supermarket, a downtown Goshen supermercado, as well as a Kroger directly across the Elkhart River from downtown.
Goshen Brewing Company has friendly service and great craft beers.

A short trip to downtown events
Chamberlain is just minutes from events in downtown Goshen. During monthly First Fridays, local businesses stay open late, and food vendors and merchants set up along the sidewalks. The Goshen Hispanic Heritage Festival has grown into a major annual event at downtown’s Powerhouse Park. Held each September – Hispanic Heritage Month – the festival features food, music and folk dances from the many Latin American cultures with a presence in Elkhart County.

Family-oriented parks and recreation
Church Park, located across the street from New Life Church, is a city pocket park with a swing set, playground and basketball half-court. Walnut Park is the neighborhood’s larger park, featuring a playground, full-court basketball, picnic shelter and a splash pad. Indoor recreation, as well as arts and music programming, is available at the Goshen Boys and Girls Club, also in Chamberlain. Chamberlain's community garden is open to neighborhood residents who don't have room for a garden at home.

Bike-friendly Pumpkinvine Nature Trail
Indiana State Road 15, known as 3rd Street in Goshen, forms the neighborhood’s western boundary. The highway leads 10 miles north to the Indiana Toll Road (Interstate 90). Chamberlain’s other primary road, Middlebury Street, travels 9 miles northeast to Middlebury. Chamberlain is also a bike-friendly area thanks to the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail, which begins in the neighborhood and is part of a 25-mile-long trail system connecting Goshen, Elkhart, Middlebury and Shipshewana.
Noise Factor a consideration
Thanks to two busy roads and a set of four train tracks on the neighborhood’s southern boundary, Chamberlain has a Noise Factor of 77/100. The area between the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail and the tracks is primarily industrial while also being home to the Goshen Water and Sewer Plant and the Elkhart County corrections center.
