Original century-old architecture

With a booming agricultural scene and a historic downtown district, Greeley has a hometown feel, where neighbors know one another and come together for community events. "Our town has focused on preserving its history,” says Chuck Bowles, a local Realtor with Austin and Austin Real Estate. “Most of the buildings downtown from Seventh to 12th Street date back to the early days of Greeley.” Buildings like the columned Weld County Courthouse as well as the Miller House, which has late-19th-century Victorian architecture, are prominent in the neighborhood.

Victorians and farmhouses

Home prices in Greeley are significantly more affordable than nearby communities like Fort Collins and Denver. Houses along the residential streets of downtown were primarily built in the early 1900s. Common architectural styles include craftsman-style bungalows, Victorians and minimal traditional farmhouses and ranch-style homes. Properties sit close to one another on quarter-acre lots and many residents rely on street parking. Houses with 750 to 1,000 square feet in need of some interior updates are listed between $290,000 and $400,000, while renovated homes between 1,200 and 2,000 square feet can go for $650,000 to $950,000.

Ninth Street shops and eateries

Local restaurants and businesses can be found along 9th Street, including Makers Mercantile and Studio. Dozens of small local artist booths line the aisles of the mercantile, with items ranging from handmade pottery and crocheted goods to leatherwork and wood carvings. “While we’ve had our fair share of growing pains in the past couple of decades, our downtown area has had a revival in recent years, with new businesses popping up and thriving,” says Bowles. Across the street, the Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant serves margaritas and classic Mexican fare on a shaded patio. Doug’s Diner is a few doors down, serving breakfast and lunch dishes like huevos rancheros, hot cakes and burritos. The Cow Saloon and Eatery has classic American pub fare alongside handcrafted cocktails and refreshing draft brews. For groceries and household essentials, Natural Grocers, Save-A-Lot and Walmart are nearby. The Greeley Farmers Market has been in the community for over 30 years. The summer market is every Saturday morning between May and October, with dozens of local vendors setting up booths along 7th Street.

Lincoln Park and riverside trails

The 10-acre Lincoln Park is the largest green space in the downtown area and was established in 1870 when the city was first being developed. Benches and mature trees dot the park, which also has a popular playground. The Weld County Courthouse overlooks Lincoln Park and stands apart from the surrounding buildings due to its stately Classical Revival architecture. “The building was made with the same marble used in the construction of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C.,” says Jessica Mauk, a Greeley local and Courthouse employee. “That’s what gave Lincoln Park its name. The building’s interior also has gorgeous stained-glass windows.” Driving north on 11th Avenue leads to an access point for the Poudre River Trail, which winds alongside its namesake river for nearly 30 miles.
