Mountaintop beauty, urban access

Located among North Jersey’s Watchung Mountains and sitting along the north bank of Raritan Valley, Green Brook Township offers a slice of small-town atmosphere – complete with an active and welcoming community, peaceful country vibes and a blend of suburban conveniences mixed with urban amenities. “I moved here from Brooklyn in 2001,” says Roseann O’Keefe, Broker-Associate with NextHome Premier. “And the transition from urban to suburban is super easy in Green Brook – the community is full of people who have made the same transition, so there’s this really strong sense of community and a friendly, country feeling to it.” With New York City 35 miles away, Green Brook Township manages to exude a sparse suburban feel despite its access to all the city offers.

Classic styles reflect rich history

“In many ways, you could argue that Green Brook has often gone under the radar as far as New York suburbs go,” says Corey Jones, Realtor with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage and longtime resident of the area. “That patten has begun to change in a big way though – people are realizing just how much of a destination the area really is, especially considering it has its own train station and is an easy drive to NYC.” Green Brook Township embraces its history and old-world charm, with ranch styles, Colonial Revivals, Cape Cod and other traditional styles being common throughout the neighborhood. Prices for these types of homes generally ranges from $450,000 to $900,000, though large estates nestled among the rich foliage of the Watchungs often exceed $1 million. Contemporary townhouses can also be found, with prices ranging from $325,000 to $560,000. “Prices can also depend on proximity to Route 22,” says O’Keefe. “The closer to the highway, the easier the commute, and the higher the price, generally.”

Highly-rated schools throughout Green Brook Township

Students in Green Brook Township can begin at Irene E. Feldkirchner Elementary School, which earns an A grade from Niche. From there, students can attend fellow A-rated Green Brook Middle School before finishing up at A-plus rated Watchung Hills Regional High School. Watchung Hills offers a variety of opportunities to its students, including extensive AP courses, STEAM initiatives, award-winning performing arts programs and more than 60 clubs.

Take in the same view George Washington did during the Revolutionary War

Those looking to explore the area’s Revolutionary War-era history can do so at Washington Rock State Park – featuring the very same mountaintop view that George Washington once used to monitor British troops in New York City. “We’re lucky to be surrounded by hills and so much greenery,” says O’Keefe. “There’s lots of trails and little greenspaces that make it a great place to explore the outdoors at.” Top of the World Park features a baseball field, tennis courts and a pavilion, along with a memorial to victims of 9/11. Arthur Lewis Park includes playground equipment, gazebos, zip lines, and a spray park, while those looking for indoor recreation can find it by throwing axes at Stumpy’s Hatchet House or playing a few frames at Bowlero Green Brook.

Plenty of options along Highway 22

Highway 22 runs through the heart of Green Brook Township, serving as the town’s main thoroughfare and commercial corridor, along with connecting locals with many of the amenities shared by neighboring Dunellen. Varied options include Dan Zai Ramen and Sushi House, which serves up East Asian delicacies with artistic flair, and Red White & Cue Smokehouse, which features classic comfort food and Southern favorites. Green Book Plaza is an open-air shopping mall with a number of options, while Bridgewater Commons Mall features nationally recognized retailers and designer brands. For groceries, residents have their choice between ShopRite, Whole Foods, Costco or Trader Joes. “The town’s motto is ‘large enough to get things done, small enough to know you,” says O’Keefe. “And that really rings true – this is the kind of place where everything you need is close by, but you still have room to breathe.”

The beach, ski slopes, and downtown Manhattan all within an hour

“It’s a cliché, but you really can’t get much more of a ‘centralized location’ than in Green Brook Township,” says O’Keefe. “Within an hour, you could be at the beach, on the ski slopes, or in midtown Manhattan.” Residents can get to NYC by means of the local train station or by way of the highway – with access to Highways 22 and 78, along with I-287 and the Garden State Parkway. While traffic in Green Brook Township is better than many of its more urban neighbors, congestion is still an issue that can affect commutes depending on the time of day.

Great school systems and a very nice place to live. It straddles route 22 with the west side having amazing views from the the residential houses on the mountain ridge. One of the best places to see fireworks on July 4th as you can see all the surrounding towns fireworks displays.

We pay very high taxes and although we do have a good school system, we do not have a vote in anything to do with high school. We pay per student and get no vote. Other than good schools, we do not get much for our money. Also, we have to pay extra, in addtion to our taxes for sewer to the next town over that processes our sewer waste. Garbage pickup is also not included in taxes

There are a lot of good restaurants, a bowling alley, and even a hatchet-throwing place called Stumpy's.
