Peaceful living, quick commuting
Bell Arthur began as a small railroad settlement in 1907. The community was incorporated as a town twice in the next 50 years: once in 1911, as “Arthur,” and again in 1933 under the new name, “Bell-Arthur.” Shortly after it was incorporated the first time, “Arthur” went the early 20th-century version of viral for being the home of a cigar-smoking three-year-old called “Gar Gar” Edwards. Bell-Arthur lost its charter in the mid-1960s; today, Bell Arthur is a census-designated place in Pitt County, between Farmville and Greenville. Ashleigh Daly, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, says its quaint, rural atmosphere is a large part of its appeal. “But it’s also right off the interstate, so it’s convenient,” she says, referring to Interstate 587, just a couple miles north. “It’s a nice place to live, especially if you have kids and want space to spread out but also want a short commute to work. It’s convenient to Greenville and the medical district there.” But the biggest draw to Bell Arthur? “The price per square footage is super reasonable,” she says.

Single-family homes at a competitive price point
While some of Bell Arthur’s original 1930s farmhouses are still standing, most of the community’s currently occupied homes were built between the 1980s and 2010s. Many are classic ranch-style, clad either in vinyl siding, brick or a combination of the two. “A lot of the homes in the neighborhood are modular homes, similar to manufactured homes,” says Daly. She explains that modular homes around here tend to be single-story structures built off-site and moved to vacant properties when the manufacturer is ready to sell them. “The price per square foot really depends on the structure itself and the condition it’s in, but I’d say that modular homes built in the early 2010s are going for between $300,000 and $365,000,” she says. In general, prices here run anywhere from $200,000 to $370,000. And at $202,500, the median sale price sits nearly $100,000 under that of nearby Greenville. Daly: “The price point is one of the most appealing things about this area, for sure.”

Bundy Elementary Schools, Farmville Middle and Farmville Central High, is a little more than 5 miles west of most homes. Collectively referred to as Sugg-Bundy, the elementary schools serve kids between kindergarten and fifth grade; kindergarteners through second graders take classes in the Sugg building, while third through fifth graders take classes in Bundy. Sugg earns an A-minus grade from Niche. Bundy and Farmville Middle receive a B-minus. Farmville Central High School gets a C-plus overall, an A for diversity and a B for teachers. Off Jones Street, on the north side of the park, a playground overlooks one of the baseball fields from behind the fence line. The Farmville Municipal Disc Golf Course is a few blocks up North Main Street. It’s named for the 18-hole disc golf course, which has long and short turf tee pads, but the park also offers a catch-and-release fishing pond and a nature trail.

Local and chain-style retailers and restaurants nearby
Locals can grab groceries at the Piggly Wiggly in Farmville, about 6 miles west. The supermarket is close to the heart of the small town, near the corner of Main and Wilson Streets and surrounded by an array of quaint, locally owned shopping and dining options. Vintage Point Toys & Collectibles and Dapper Dan’s Art & Antiques offer unique treasures to suit a wide range of customer ages. Ahead of starting a new home improvement project, weekend warriors can head to Farmville Hardware. Nearby, Farmville Flower Basket features floral arrangements alongside jewelry, apparel and specialty gifts. Gorhams Café is two blocks west of the bustling intersection of Main and Wilson and serves up classic Southern comfort food, including, of course, East Carolina-style barbecue. On the northwest side of Farmville, The Duck-Rabbit Craft Brewery’s taproom and outdoor beer garden have drawn craft beer enthusiasts from around town since 2004. The microbrewery hosted the first annual Rub’n Shoulders Farmville BBQ Festival in July 2024, complete with a barbecue cook-off, live music, kids activities and local vendors. Daly says that many locals head into Greenville for a wider selection of stores with nationally recognized names, from Target to Walmart. “That’s where your closest big-box-type stores are, whether you’re looking for department stores or grocery stores.”

Interstate 587 connects to Raleigh and Greenville
Interstate 587 runs east-west past the north side of Bell Arthur, about 3 miles from most homes. “It’s right off the interstate, which is really nice. You can take the interstate right into Raleigh and be there in about an hour, or take it the other way straight into the medical district in Greenville,” says Daly. The nearly 80-mile drive west from here to Raleigh via I-587 typically takes about an hour and 15 minutes, depending on traffic. The ECU Health Medical Center, in the heart of Greenville’s medical district about 7 miles east, can take as little as 20 minutes. “The convenience to Greenville is a big draw, especially for nurses and people working in the medical field,” says Daly. And for residents flying farther afield, the Pitt-Greenville Airport is only about 15 miles northeast. American Airlines provides a three-flight daily commuter service to Charlotte. “And from Charlotte, you can go basically anywhere in the world. It’s a beautiful, cute little airport, with a very nice lounge and waiting area,” says Realtor Melinda Deigan of United East Carolina Real Estate.
