Tranquility in Haiku-Pauwela
Clifftop vistas and tiny roadside cafes characterize a drive through Hawaii’s Haiku-Pauwela. Residents live island life in the slow lane, neighboring orchards, equestrian ranches, healing gardens and some of Maui's best surfboard aficionados. “Haiku is very artistic and organic,” says Dave Futch, a longtime Haiku resident and local Realtor. “There’s a lot of yoga and natural foods with an emphasis on super-healthy living and authentic Hawaiian influences. It’s also on the island’s windward side, meaning it’s not hot and dry every day. You get to enjoy the rain that keeps the area lush and green.”
The Road to Hana
While Haiku-Pauwela is home to many tourist attractions like zip lines and retreats, there’s far more to this slice of the island than meets the eye. The Road to Hana, a 64-mile stretch along Hana Highway connecting the towns of Kahului and Hana, is considered one of the great road trips of the U.S. Mile markers are often situated near trailheads, like the Waikamoi Ridge Trail, which ventures past some of Maui’s oldest trees. Ho’olawa Valley is home to Twin Falls, a scenic waterfall trail passing the Twin Falls Farm Stand. Run by the family-owned Wailele Farm, the stand offers fresh produce to help remind guests not to pick fruit from the surrounding native trees. Peahi Beach is well-known for its massive surfing waves, breathtaking gulches and overlook points surrounding Kuiaha Bay. “You’ll find water sports enthusiasts here who are into windsurfing, kite surfing and even a newer sport called wing foiling,” says Futch. “So, if you’re into surfing, winging or even proning, Haiku is a fantastic place.”
Dwelling on the quiet side of Maui
Landscapes brimming with jacaranda and banyan trees are woven into Haiku-Pauwela’s loose network of residential and agricultural properties, the kind of place locals prefer to live, thanks to its quiet nature. Home styles include bright, open-concept plans constructed in the early 2000s and plantation homes dating back to the 1920s. Prices in the area typically hover around $1 million, though vacant lots are marked lower, while coastal properties with more than 5,000 square feet can reach nearly $15 million. Whether situated off Hana Highway or Hawini Bay, homes will consistently offer panoramas of Maui’s tropical flora, coastline or lush, hilly terrain.
Fresh-Baked Aloha
Along Hana Highway, folks can linger on the wraparound deck at Jaws Country Store for a latte and fresh baked goods or a pork melt sandwich for lunch. Some of the region’s finest ribs are found at Aloha’aina BBQ on Maliko Country Farms. Guests veer inland off Hana Highway to experience “fresh-baked aloha” at Baked on Maui, famous for its MCT-oil coffee concoctions and a spectrum of innovative omelets. Sushi lovers consider the intimate Nuka restaurant one of Haiku-Pauwela’s finest. In Haiku Town, many stop at Wailuku Coffee Company before grocery shopping at Haiku Market. The Pauwela Cannery Mall was a former pineapple cannery transformed into a hub for surfboard shapers, art studios and carpenters. The quaint, family-owned Pauwela Store here stocks healthy organic goods, grab-and-go meals, beer, wine and spirits.
Education on The Valley Isle
Students in the community have been attending Haiku Elementary School for more than 100 years. With a B-minus on Niche, it’s known as “The Little School with a Big Heart,” integrating art, technology and wellness into the curriculum. Samuel Enoka Kalama Intermediate School and King Kekaulike High are located in neighboring Makawao. The former earns a C-plus on Niche, while the latter earns a B-plus. Montessori School of Maui is a private school farther inland, enrolling kindergarten through eighth grade. Though unrated on Niche, families can expect their students to follow a curriculum centered around intellectual, social and emotional needs.
From Hana to Kahului
Hana Highway stretches across Maui’s east coast, from Kahului in the north to Hana farther south. Haiku-Pauwela is around 14 miles from Kahului, the island's most populated city. Maui County Transit provides bus stops along Haiku Islander Route 35, offering stops along Hana Highway from Haiku Marketplace into Kahului. The Kahului Airport is less than 12 miles from many residences, though the nearest hospital—Kaiser Permanente—is on the other side of the island in Keokea, about 17 miles southwest. Hana is about 17 miles southeast.
