Village of Hamburg has a small-town feel

For a taste of the good life, homebuyers may consider the Village of Hamburg. Located in the town of Hamburg, New York, the 9,000 residents here savor the small-town feel, proximity to Buffalo, and the claim to fame that comes with living in the area where America’s beloved hamburger was created. “The town of Hamburg is the birthplace of the burger. The village itself is very charming. We will be 150 years old in 2024. There are buildings on Main Street that used to be stables and now everything has been renovated,” says Lisa Avery, a Realtor with Howard Hanna, who’s been selling homes in the area for 35 years. “It’s a very walkable community and there’s a big drive for that. People want to be part of a walkable community where you can get to know your neighbors.”

Village of Hamburg hosts the annual BurgerFest

Residents of the Village of Hamburg don’t refer to themselves as Hamburgers, but they most certainly bond over them. There’s a community fundraising effort underway to paint the town’s water tower to look like a hamburger and every year the village hosts BurgerFest, which celebrates the town of Hamburg’s claim that it’s the birthplace of the burger. The story goes that at the 1885 Erie County Fair, two brothers from Ohio ran out of sausage and left only with ground beef, they invented the first hamburger on the fly. The event, which takes place on Main and Buffalo Streets in mid-July, features live music, a classic car show, a beer tent, and the mouth-watering smell of freshly cooked burgers wafting from food trucks.

Main and Buffalo streets serve as the shopping hub

Strolling the Village of Hamburg’s business district on Main and Buffalo streets, residents can pick up a classic read at Turn the Page used bookstore, peruse the vinyl collection at Ross Records or catch a movie at the century-old Hamburg Palace Theatre. For dining out, Grange Community Kitchen is a must-try for its locally sourced menu and specialty wood-fired pizzas. Hamburg Brewing Company, on Boston State Road, is the go-to spot to meet with friends for a beer on the outdoor patio overlooking the pond. When residents crave an evening at home with a homecooked meal, a grocery run can be easily handled at Tops on South Park Avenue.
