Suburban Neighborhood in New Jersey
Bergen County 07641
Haworth is your quintessential slow place, friendly small town. With no major roadways, chain stores or industry buildings, it's no surprise this 2-square-mile Bergen County borough has been called one of the top three suburbs in the country by Business Insider. Haworth is home to a red-brick schoolhouse, a one-block business district and only two traffic lights.
It's common for New Yorkers to leave the big city and find their new home in Haworth. After starting their home search in neighboring areas, New Yorkers will find that for the same prices, they can get more bang for their buck in Haworth. Here they can find larger lots and a quieter pace of life. Home prices tend to begin in the high $700,000s and climb to $2.6 million. Most houses cost somewhere in the $1 million range. Near the country clubs, residents live in older and larger homes, while other areas features many renovated and expanded residences. Until a few years ago, Haworth only had single-family homes. Now there's some luxury townhomes on the borough's edge. At Lake Shore Estates, you can choose from three floorplans with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a two-car garage and a patio.
Local children can attend the highly rated Haworth Public School for kindergarten through eighth grade. With a student-teacher ratio of 9 to 1, parents have compared Haworth Public to their children receiving a private education without the admission price. The school created a wellness room in 2019 for students. The emotional-support space, where students can seek out school counselors, has beanbag chairs and yoga mats. For high school, students attend Northern Valley Regional High in nearby Demarest. A National Blue Ribbon School, Northern Valley Regional is ranked in the Top 20 best public high schools in the state, according to Niche. With an overall A-plus rating, Northern Valley Regional has an A-plus in academics, teachers and college preparation.
Haworth is home to two premier country clubs, both previous hosts to U.S. Open tennis sectional qualifiers. While golfing is the most popular pastime at both clubs, members can also play tennis and swim. A beloved neighborhood hideaway is Haworth Swim Club which offers swim lessons for all members and a competitive swim team. The borough's duck pond is a popular spot for fishing. Haworth Memorial Field has a large playground, including a wooden castle-like fixture. For hiking enthusiasts, a forested trail runs parallel to the Oradell Reservoir.
The tiny downtown welcomes you with several mom-and-pop shops like an apothecary, a yoga studio and a sushi restaurant. This small block is fixed with lamp posts, sidewalks and architectural charm. Alessandro's Trattoria & Pizzeria, a local favorite for nearly 20 years, is a great place to meet friends, celebrate a milestone or have a quick bite. Alessandro's old-fashioned rustic southern Italian style comes through in its pizza, pasta and traditional dishes. There's also a mini-mart, a couple of doctor's offices and a coffee shop. As you round the corner, there's a post office, a hardware store and a few more shops. There's a Whole Foods and Target in nearby Closter for all your grocery and household needs.
Roughly a 25-minute drive from the George Washington Bridge, Haworth residents can reasonably travel into Manhattan when necessary. But more often than not, residents enjoy their slower pace and charming small-town life in Haworth.
