Hollywood by the sea

Downtown Hollywood, home to an iconic boulevard with public art, cultural events, eclectic restaurants and locally owned boutiques, is well on its way to fulfilling the vision of its founder, Joseph Wesley Young. A real estate developer, Young was Hollywood’s first mayor in 1925 and played a major role in rebuilding the city after the hurricane of 1926. He dreamed of creating a coastal city with a palm tree-lined boulevard from the Intracoastal Waterway to the Everglades. While Hollywood Boulevard proper doesn’t go that far west, Young’s idea of curving the road around massive traffic circles eventually created Downtown Hollywood’s beating heart: ArtsPark at Young Circle. Hollywood has always had the beauty of the ocean on its coast, but the interactive park gave the city a centerpiece. “That was like the first hurrah. It upgraded the city,” says Hollywood native Lonna Spitaleri, the broker and owner of Costa Bella Realty Group. “It’s all coming into place now; everything is being built up.”

ArtsPark at Young Circle and the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk

The neighborhood’s budding arts scene was kicked into overdrive with the opening of ArtsPark at Young Circle. The 10-acre traffic-circle park is a recreation, relaxation, art and entertainment hub. The green space is shaded by mature trees, including several Baobab trees, the second-widest tree species in the world. It has traditional park amenities like a playground, a dog run and a popular walking loop that people bike, run and even rollerblade around. It also has an amphitheater with free weekly concerts and a pavilion hosting various art demonstrations, from live glass blowing to salsa classes. Local foodies are sure to mark off the first Monday of the month for Food in Motion, an event that brings dozens of food trucks to the park. Hollywood’s oceanfront is also a big part of downtown living, says Eli Polsky, a born-and-raised Hollywood resident who works as a Realtor with his brother, Brandon Polsky, at the Polsky Group at Compass. “I live downtown, and we’re 2 miles from the beach. I ride my bike there often to get to the Broadwalk.” The Hollywood Oceanfront Broadwalk is a lively 2-mile stretch of restaurants, bars and shops that overlook the beach. Polsky highlights Nick’s Bar and Grill as an “awesome little place to grab a beer and conch fritters.” Even closer to downtown, Hollywood Beach Golf Club is another popular recreational hangout featuring an 18-hole course.

Spanish Mission cottages and midcentury ranches

From modest midcentury ranch-style homes to charming Spanish Mission cottages, Downtown Hollywood has a lot of architectural character. Some of the neighborhood’s oldest houses date back to the 1930s. Prices vary largely depending on the property’s condition and square footage. Two- and three-bedroom houses range from $600,000 to $1 million. Four- and five-bedroom homes fall between the mid $800,000s and $1.5 million. Some of the highest-priced options in Downtown Hollywood are situated near Hollywood Beach Golf Club and offer fairway views. For those who want to avoid lawn maintenance, one-bedroom condos typically price between $150,000 and $250,000; however, one-bedroom units in new-construction buildings like Circ Residences are listed in the high $400,000s.

Shopping and dining on Hollywood Boulevard

Downtown Hollywood is filled with colorful murals and cherished local eateries. The Melbean Coffee Shop is a go-to for morning pick-me-ups and freshly baked pastries. Orale Mexican Restaurant serves authentic cuisine to the tune of a live Mariachi band. Next door, Helen Huang’s Mandarin is a tried-and-true takeout spot. “You have a lot of options for a family dinner or a date night,” Polsky says. After dark, the bars and late-night eateries on Harrison Street and Hollywood Boulevard come to life. Locals and tourists descend on the downtown area for drinks, games and live music at bars like The Tipsy Boar and the pirate-themed Octopus Garden Bar. For shopping needs, the new Publix Supermarket at Hollywood Circle is near the heart of downtown.

Hands-on marine learning at South Broward High

Hollywood is served by Broward County Public Schools. Hollywood Central Elementary is right in the neighborhood and is graded C-plus on Niche. Olsen Middle also earns a C-plus, and South Broward High is graded B-plus. The Holly-Go is downtown’s newest addition

The Holly-Go Shuttle is a new addition to downtown living. The free shuttle service launches Oct. 1, 2024. It will feature four lines looping between various spots around the city, such as parks, shopping strips, hospitals, beachfront destinations and City Hall. The shuttle will work in tandem with current public transportation, which includes the Sun-Shuttle, a $2, on-demand short-trip service, and Broward County Transit buses. Downtown is roughly 2 miles from Interstate 95 and about 5 miles south of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The closest hospital, Memorial Regional Hospital, is slightly over 3 miles away.
