Long a center of petroleum production, Houston is now a thriving metropolis, boasting the fourth-largest population of any city in the United States and the seventh-largest GDP. One of its original neighborhoods is Midtown, whose own socio-economic trajectory has tracked that of the larger city. With the decline in oil prices during the 1980s, residents and businesses left in droves. The 1990s in Midtown were characterized by vacant buildings and few homes. But present-day Midtown has seen a renaissance spurred by the efforts of the Midtown Redevelopment Authority. It’s now home to almost 9,500 residents and more than 140 restaurants. There are sidewalks throughout, and streets are shaded by mature trees. The most walkable neighborhood in the city, Midtown keeps residents entertained and engaged with plentiful amenities.
Loads of local shopping
Shopping opportunities abound in Midtown, often in the form of locally owned businesses. Al’s Handmade Boots is a neighborhood staple. Alvaro “Al” Rivera, a fifth-generation bootmaker, handcrafts boots and other custom leather products in his shop on Fannin Street. Those with a green thumb can pop into The Flora Culture. With the expert staff guidance and a wide assortment of plants, this shop has been helping beautify Midtown since 2019. Music fans flock to Sig’s Lagoon to peruse sheaves of vintage records and other collectibles. For groceries and other more pedestrian needs, residents head to Randalls, conveniently located in the heart of Midtown.

Restaurants from upscale to dives
When cooking at home isn’t on the agenda, Midtown residents on average live within a 5-minute walk of eight restaurants, bars or coffee shops. Locals love to start their day at The Breakfast Klub, whose owners claim that the intentional misspelling helps customers remember the name. When plans call for more upscale dining, Brennan’s is a Houston institution that has been serving New Orleans-inspired Creole cuisine for brunch, lunch and dinner since 1967. When it’s time for happy hour or a night on the town, Axelrad Beer Garden is a favorite watering hole. It features 25 craft beers on tap, a lineup that changes nightly, along with a full bar and signature cocktails. There is nightly entertainment on the outdoor patio, from movies to comedians to live music, and local food trucks make regular appearances.

Out and about in Midtown
Before the neighborhood was called Midtown, it was part of Houston’s historic Fourth Ward, populated by newly freed slaves in the mid-19th century. Several cultural sites celebrate the importance of that past. The Ensemble Theatre, founded in 1976, is home to the largest Black theater company in the United States. Recent shows have included "A Motown Christmas,” “Chicken & Biscuits” and “Pullman Porter Blues.” Midtown is also the site of the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum, showcasing the history of Black soldiers from the Civil War to the present through exhibits, speakers and live reenactments. Another cultural touchpoint: the 20 murals adorning walls throughout the neighborhood. These range from intricately patterned mosaics to playful takes on Houston’s place in American history. Eleanor Tinsley Park on the neighborhood’s northern edge offers unobstructed views of the Houston skyline, as well as vast open space with jogging and biking paths. Picnic tables allow for al fresco dining, and the park hosts several annual festivals, including Houston’s famous Fourth of July fireworks. Midtown Park is a true urban park: a centrally located green space with climbing structures for kids, tables for enjoying lunch outdoors and an enclosed dog park.
