An environment representative of the region
West Pea Ridge offers rural living not too far from Huntington’s city center. Residents are close to many of Huntington’s commercial amenities, from restaurants to grocery shopping. The neighborhood’s landscape is shaped by the city’s location along the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. It’s calm, sloping streets give West Pea Ridge a rustic setting. “It’s really beautiful, and it reminds you more about the rest of the state,” says Will Holland, a Realtor with EXP Realty and a West Virginia native. “As opposed to other parts of the town, which are more urban.”

Options abound in a sprawling pocket of town
Situated on the south side of Huntington, West Pea Ridge is an expansive neighborhood that stretches into the city’s outskirts. The wide area harbors a relatively wide selection of homes. Many were built from the mid-to-late 20th century, but homebuyers can find everything from Craftsman-style bungalows to new traditional houses. “It’s a little bit of everything for anyone. For what they could be looking for,” says Lisa Eden, a local agent with Old Colony REALTORS, who has almost 30 years of industry experience. The hills here leave room for sizable yards — it’s not uncommon for lots to total half an acre or more. Homes sell for $90,000 to $500,000 based on condition and size.

Cabell County covers afterschool care
The area’s Cabell County Schools system has a B grade on Niche. Most students in West Pea Ridge attend the B-minus-rated Altizer Elementary, but some, on the west side, go to the C-plus-rated Explorer Academy. Both elementary schools offer after-school programming, including tutoring. The area’s C-plus-rated Huntington East Middle has extracurricular opportunities like a theater troupe and an archery group. Students at the B-rated Huntington High can enter academies focused on topics such as STEM and human services. They can also take courses at the Cabell County Career Technology Center, which is part of West Pea Ridge and facilitates instruction in everything from welding to graphic design.

U.S. Route 60 connects residents with the rest of the city
West Pea Ridge balances its rural feel with easy access to other parts of town. “Within 10 minutes, you can be just about anywhere in Huntington,” Eden says. U.S. Route 60 can help drivers here get around town, as can Interstate 64 — and sections of both run through this neighborhood. Downtown Huntington is roughly 6 miles northwest using Route 60, and the 413-bed St. Mary's Medical Center is 4 miles north. I-64 is a link to the Huntington Tri-State Airport, which is 16 miles north and offers commercial flights through Allegiant and American Airlines.
Barboursville Park is a big recreation option
West Pea Ridge runs into the Village of Barboursville, placing residents just north of Barboursville Park. This 750-acre expanse features more than three dozen trails, a 15-field sports complex, eight tennis courts, five playgrounds, an amphitheater and a splash park. “It’s very popular for kids and families during the summer,” Holland says of the splash park, open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The Guyan Golf & Country Club stretches into West Pea Ridge as well, which Holland notes is the only country club in the area. “It’s a very, very nice establishment that offers golf, tennis, a pool and really, really nice dining,” Holland says.

Tequila Grill takes one of the top spots for dining
The neighborhood’s quiet streets connect to Route 60, an artery that — in addition to being an asset for transportation — is lined with restaurants and other businesses. Tequila Grill serves authentic Mexican food and margaritas, while Christopher’s Eats offers brunch. Those two, along with Oscar's Breakfast, Burgers & Brews a bit farther east in Barboursville, are what Holland considers the most frequented restaurants in the area. Many more options are a relatively quick drive away, many of them in Downtown Huntington. “When you’re in Huntington, within a 10- to 15-minute drive, you can have steak restaurants, Italian. You can have German,” Eden says. “I mean, there’s just a little bit of everything in that area.” There’s also a Walmart on Route 60 for groceries and more.
