A north Huntsville neighborhood with potential
The Lakewood neighborhood of Huntsville is not new, but it is on the rise. Investors and first-time homebuyers can find properties well under the Huntsville Metro Area average, and the neighborhood is close to major highways and downtown Huntsville. For the right person, says managing broker Stella Torres of Momentum Realty, LLC, the community can check a lot of boxes. “It can feel good and ideal and quaint,” Torres says.
Ranch-style houses with a dome-home feel
The neighborhood’s homes are primarily ranch-style with brick siding and wood floors. Most of the houses were built in the 1960s and 1970s, and some have been recently renovated. Smaller oak trees dot the neighborhood’s front lawns. Sidewalks are available on bigger streets. Well-kept homes typically range from $120,000 to $280,000. Investment properties are also available, usually from $80,000 to $160,000. The neighborhood has a CAP Index Crime Score of 6 out of 10, higher than the national average of 4. The community’s overall score is influenced by high scores in violent crime.
Mae Jemison High School prepares students for college
Students are served by Huntsville City Schools. Students can attend Lakewood Elementary, which earned a C grade from Niche. Ronald E. McNair Junior High School has a C Niche grade. Mae Jemison High School, which holds a C grade from Niche, offers a College Academy General Magnet program that allows participants to earn 30-60 hours of college credit. Alabama A&M University sits across Memorial Parkway to the east.
Lakewood Community Center hosts pickup basketball
The Dr. Richard Showers, Sr. Recreation Center has an indoor pool and offers line dancing classes. The Lakewood Community Center has free-play basketball and tennis. Lakewood Park is the neighborhood’s team-sports hub, with baseball and softball fields and multi-purpose fields with lights. Nearby Monte Sano State Park has 20 miles of hiking trails and 14 miles of biking trails, which in the spring are awash in azaleas. The North Huntsville Public Library offers laptop and 3D printer use on top of its books and magazines. A playground and pickleball courts sit on the library's campus, which hosts events like Sister 2 Sister and Brother 2 Brother book club meetings.
Betty Mae's is a lunchtime hot spot
Lakewood Shopping Center is anchored by Lowe’s Home Improvement and filled with chain restaurants like Wings to Go. Island Jerk serves authentic Jamaican cuisine. Betty Mae’s is a family-run soul food lunch spot. In downtown Huntsville, 1892 East Restaurant & Tavern serves New American dishes with several vegetarian options. Kroger and Walmart Supercenter are grocery store options. Traditional retail stores like Belk and Finish Line can be found at Parkway Place mall.
Alabama A&M University football runs fall Saturdays
Alabama A&M football games bring the community together at nearby Louis Crews Stadium each fall, where people root on the Bulldogs. The stadium has a capacity of 21,000, making it the 10th-largest stadium in the state. It also hosts concerts and the school’s commencement ceremonies.
The Orbit Bus runs through the neighborhood
Huntsville’s Orbit Bus has several stops in the community, connecting residents to the rest of the city. Memorial Parkway is the neighborhood’s right boundary, allowing people to travel 4 miles south to downtown Huntsville or north to Tennessee. Huntsville Hospital is 6 miles away. Huntsville International Airport is a 16-mile drive.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
