Close to downtown with an identity of its own

Though its namesake church closed its doors to parishioners in 2018, Holy Cross is still one of the most vibrant and community-oriented neighborhoods in Indianapolis. “We try to make it so people have opportunities to see each other and form community bonds,” says Holy Cross Neighborhood Association president Jen Higginbotham. Located just across Interstate 70 from downtown, this Near Eastside neighborhood combines the perks of that proximity with amenities of its own.

Plenty of pizza and an array of antiques

Holy Cross is a pizza lover’s delight thanks to a pair of Indy’s top pizzerias: King Dough and Futuro. King Dough specializes in New York-style pies, while Futuro focuses on Detroit-style and Chicago tavern-style pizzas. La Parada, voted Indy’s top Mexican restuarant in 2021, is another neighborhood staple. Natural State Provisions, a Southern-style restaurant and bar with a roomy outdoor patio and dog park, is a top summer hot spot. Ash & Elm Cider Co. Offers a full food menu to match with its house-made ciders. And the neighborhood has its own version of Antiques Roadshow thanks to the 40,000-square foot Midland Arts & Antiques Market. “It’s just an eclectic mix of anything from furniture to dishware to posters of characters from the past. And lots of records,” Higginbotham says. “You can find anything and everything.”

Homes date to the turn of the 20th Century

Most houses in Holy Cross are east of the neighborhood’s centerpiece, Highland Park. The western half of the neighborhood, where there is some flood risk between Pogue’s Run and I-70, is primarily commercial. Most of the neighborhood’s houses were built between the late 1890s-late 1910s. Newer custom-builds are also popping up and tend to fit in with the character of those bungalows and Craftsman-style houses. The price range for homes in Holy Cross is from $200,000-$750,000.

Highland Park is Indy's perch

Highland Park is one of the highest points in Indianapolis and offers immaculate views of downtown. The 4-acre park has a picnic shelter, playground, and walking trails. The Sturm Avenue Esplanade is a block-long stretch of neutral ground that’s been transformed into a park area with a playground, gazebo and grills.

Events build sense of community

The Wine and Cheese Fest hosted by the Holy Cross Neighborhood Association is becoming a signature neighborhood event. There are educational sessions on pairing wines and cheeses, a grilled cheese cookoff, plus a large play area for kids. For years, Highland Park was considered the best place in the city to view fireworks on the Fourth of July, but the city moved the show a few blocks north from the Salesforce Tower in 2021. “It’s still a great place to be for the Fourth,” Higginbotham says. “People still show up because of the tradition.”

Holy Cross schools in a transition period

Holy Cross schools are in a transition period. Washington Irving School 14 joined the Indianapolis Public Schools Innovation Network in 2023. The K-8 school received a D-grade on Niche when it previously operated as a charter school. Holy Cross Central Catholic closed its doors at the end of the 2023 school year, with students transferred to St. Philip Neri School. Arsenal Tech, Indy’s largest high school on a 76-acre campus, is in neighboring Cottage Grove. Arsenal Tech has a C-rating on Niche. A-plus rated Herron High, a charter school open to Holy Cross residents, is two miles from the neighborhood.

Convenient to many forms of transportation

Multiple bike lanes and a Pacers Bikeshare hub near King Dough make Holy Cross an ideal neighborhood for bicyclists. It’s also about a 20-to-30-minute walk to downtown Indianapolis. “It’s very easy to walk downtown,” Higginbotham says. And with I-70 forming the neighborhood’s western boundary, all of Indy is easily accessible by car. IndyGo bus routes 3 and 8 also go through Holy Cross.

Plenty of bus routes run through Holy Cross, making it easy to get around town.

Busy streets can be heard

With I-70 to the west and busy Washington Street to the south, significant traffic noise is heard in parts of the neighborhood. Those issues are less pronounced in the neighborhood’s primarily residential eastern half.
