A 'suburb in the city' on Indy's Northside
Though considered one neighborhood by the City of Indianapolis, Near Northside is a combination of multiple distinct neighborhoods: Kennedy-King, Herron-Morton, Meridian-Highland, Fall Creek Place, Reagan Park and Monon Yard. Along with Old Northside, these neighborhoods sit just across Interstate 65 from downtown Indianapolis. “I call this neighborhood 'the suburbs of the city,'” says Mina Kadhum, broker with Trueblood Real Estate. There’s a common bond between the Near Northside’s many communities – access to parks, yards with old trees, an easy trip downtown, and an array of good eating.

Diverse menus provide some of Indy's best eating
Tinker Street, located on the 16th Street boundary between Herron-Morton and Old Northside, features a rotating seasonal menu and was named one of USA Today’s eight best places to eat in the Midwest. Yet no American president has eaten there yet. That distincton belongs to Kountry Kitchen in Kennedy-King, a soul food restaurant frequented by out-of-towners and locals alike. Dubbed “the best soul food ever” by Shaquille O’Neal, Kountry Kitchen also serves more than 2,000 meals for the needy every Christmas. Along the 22nd Street corridor, options vary from coffee and cocktail spot Gather 22 to the formal (Bocca Modern Italian) or a laid-back modern diner (Baby’s). Other neighborhood favorites include Lincoln Square Pancake House in Meridian-Highland and Pure-trition Juice and Smoothie Bar in Kennedy-King. The popular Massachusetts Avenue entertainment district, about a mile from the center of the neighborhood, can also be reached on foot. There is one grocery store in the neighborhood – a Kroger on 16th St. -- as well as Needler’s Market and a Whole Foods nearby.

More than anywhere else in the city, carriage houses are a common sight, providing a potential income stream for homebuyers through long- or short-term rentals. “It’s part of the property, people don’t parcel them off,” Kadhum says. “The most common is a two-car garage with either a studio or one bedroom apartment attached.”

MLK Park remembers key moment in Indianapolis history
Near Northside’s largest park commemorates a watershed moment. Robert F. Kennedy was in the neighborhood campaigning for President on the night of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination in 1968, and Kennedy chose to break the devastating news to a predominantly African American crowd. His impromptu speech and expression of grief, credited with maintaining a sense of peace in Indianapolis during one of the most tumultuous weeks in American history, is commemorated with the Landmark for Peace Memorial at Martin Luther King Jr. Park. The sculpture symbolizes what Kennedy and King strived to achieve for racial justice before both their lives were cut short. MLK Memorial Park also features a swimming pool, playground, basketball court and community garden. In Herron-Morton, the well-manicured Herron-Morton Place Park features a playground, swing sets and multiple benches shaded by tree canopies.

Different parts of neighborhood have different concerns
The southern half of the neighborhood is the noisier half thanks to its proximity to I-65 as well as ambulance and helicopter traffic at the hospital. The flip side? Flooding is less of a concern than it is in the northwest part of the neighborhood – Meridian-Highland and Fall Creek Place – which are in the Fall Creek flood zone.
