Agricultural past lingers in rural Indianapolis suburb
Farm-fresh produce and family-friendly events based around local agriculture are just some of the things that residents take away from Southeast Indianapolis's rural landscape, although it's located only 8 miles from the city center. Sun-ripened strawberries are fresh for picking in the summer, and heaps of bright orange pumpkins fill the fields in the fall at Waterman's Family Farm, located in the neighborhood. "To me, it's a friendly, comfortable neighborhood," says Carol Waterman, owner of Waterman's Family Farm and a Southeast Indianapolis resident since 1978. "I know the people appreciate what we do, and I get a 'thank you' every now and then, which makes it all worthwhile." Residents also appreciate having an elementary school, community Little League and fairgrounds nearby. Situated within the city's circular border of Interstate 465, other urban amenities are not far away.
Seasonal produce at Waterman's Family Farm
Farm-fresh eats are easy to come by in Southeast Indianapolis. Waterman's Family Farm opened in 1978 as a venue for locals to pick their own produce. Strawberries are available for picking in June, which is also a good time to turn out for the annual Strawberry Festival. Waterman's Farm Market offers a variety of seasonal produce including sweet corn, tomatoes, green beans, and bell peppers in the summer. "People come back for the tomatoes and sweet corn," Waterman says. "They're so different from what you get at the store." More groceries are available 3 miles away at Kroger or 5 miles away at Walmart Neighborhood Market.
Locals can travel to nearby neighborhoods when they want to dine out. About 4 miles away, Baan Thai Bistro offers comforting Thai dishes like pad Thai and tropical fried rice served in a pineapple. Southeast Indianapolis is just 3 miles from Beech Grove, offering trendy shopping and dining experiences along Main Street. "Beech Grove has been experiencing a renaissance that has come with independent coffee shops and restaurants," says Susan Forrest, Realtor with United Real Estate Indianapolis. Napoli Villa offers traditional dishes like lasagna served in an old-school Italian environment with white tablecloths and candles. The street offers a fun nighttime experience with several casual bars.

Fun and games at the Marion County Fair
The community comes together for the annual Marion County Fair. What started as a street fair in 1930 is now a big celebration that includes fireworks, live music, a petting zoo and tasty fair food. Residents cheer on their favorite four-legged friend in the K9 Frisbee Dogs showcase and climb high above the neighborhood on the Ferris wheel. The fair celebrates Marion's agricultural history with several livestock barns. Waterman's Family Farm is another venue for highly anticipated events, with hay rides in the fall, festive lights in the winter and juicy strawberries in the summer.
Established neighborhoods and newer subdivisions
On the north side, older neighborhoods have shady, tree-lined streets, while to the south, newer subdivisions have more contemporary housing styles. Ranch-style homes and petite bungalow-style homes make up the older neighborhoods, originating from the early to mid-20th century. Many bungalows come with porches or covered front entryways. Prices start around $100,000 for these smaller homes ranging around 1,000 square feet. Mature trees tower over the neighborhood's older areas, providing lots of shade over spacious front lawns. New traditional homes built after 2000 make up the neighborhood's south side, with brick and vinyl siding on the exterior and attached two-car garages. Averaging around 2,000 square feet, these homes are on the market for around $270,000. While there aren't many sidewalks, many residential areas have lower speed limits.

Locals stroll through the trees at Ellenberger Park
Irvington Baseball and Softball teaches kids how to hit a home run, beginning with t-ball at age four. Practices and games take place on the fields at McNulty Park. Rustic Driving Range and Mini Golf is another family-friendly venue. It offers a true miniature version of a golf course, with real grass, obstacles and trees. About 3 miles north, Ellenberger Park's 42 acres include a seasonal swimming pool, playgrounds, tennis courts and a sand volleyball court. Thickets of trees offer plenty of shade over the winding walking paths. The park is also home to the Irvington Farmers Market from June through October.
