Quiet, laid-back living tucked away in the wooded farmland of Western New York

Cattaraugus is a rural community tucked away in the vast, wooded farmland of Western New York. Divided between Erie County, Chautauqua County and Cattaraugus County — the latter of which serving as its namesake — Cattaraugus contains a reservation of the Seneca Nation of Indians, who have a significant footprint in New York's rich history. A 29-mile drive from Buffalo, Cattaraugus offers a quiet, laid-back atmosphere and simple living in the countryside. Entertainment and shopping options can be found in the village of Gowanda, which neighbors the region. "The village of Gowanda is generally safe. It has its own police department and there's lots of churches," says local Realtor Lisa Uschold of Howard Hanna Real Estate Services, who specializes in selling residential, land and farm properties within Erie County. "Springville has the largest hospital in the area, so that would reach to Gowanda."

Locals often flock to the community center to hit the gym, work on their jump shot or lace up the skates for a hockey game at the ice arena. Known as "CCC" to many, the community center even offers packages for birthday parties. While it's a bit of a drive away, locals can head to Seneca Nation Beach in Irving, stationed on the shores of Lake Erie. Not far from the beach is Seneca Gaming & Entertainment, where residents can take part in auctions and win prizes. In Gowanda, the Hollywood Theatre is a popular attraction for its historic ambiance while Zoar Valley Multiple Use Area sits 3 miles south of the village. "Zoar Valley is very unique," Uschold says. "The largest tulip tree east of the Mississippi is located within it, and there also is an American Chestnut Preserve located near the park that was privately gifted to a preservation society."
