Green Trails is a residential suburb zoned for Katy schools

In the northwest outskirts of Houston near the city of Katy, Green Trails is a master-planned neighborhood made up of several residential subdivisions. Bordering the neighborhood to the north is Interstate 10, an east-west arterial highway that travels in a straight line between central Katy and downtown Houston. “Between the location and schools, it’s a very sought-after area,” says Kerri Schultz, a local Realtor with Keller Williams Premier Realty. “The neighborhood is zoned for the Katy Independent School District but still has a Houston address.” Green Trails has an overall CAP Index crime score of 2 out of 10, lower than the national average score of 4. “Once people move here, they don’t leave. It’s a very family-oriented neighborhood,” Schultz says.

Traditional homes along tree-lined cul-de-sacs

In Green Trails, potential homebuyers will find tree-lined cul-de-sacs and winding residential streets flanked by rows of single-family homes dating back to the 1990s. “It’s not a newer development; there have been a lot of renovations on the older homes,” Schultz says. She also adds that most of the neighborhood is dominated by red-brick traditional-style homes. Stone facades and asymmetrical compositions are also common architectural features. Properties sit on sizeable, well-maintained lots and sometimes have recreational amenities like backyard pools. Single-family homes here range from approximately $450,000 to $700,000 and sell relatively fast. Listings only spend an average of 21 days on the market, compared to the 47-day national average.

The neighborhood is zoned for the highly rated Katy Independent School District

Despite its Houston address, Green Trails is zoned for the Katy Independent School District, which receives an overall A-plus from Niche, which rated it the best school district in the Houston area in 2025. Students in prekindergarten through fifth grade can attend the A-rated Nottingham Country Elementary School, while Memorial Parkway Junior High, an A-minus-rated institution, serves those in sixth through eighth grade. James E. Taylor High School is rated A-plus and offers Advanced Placement and Career & Technical Education programs. “The schools here are all well-ranked and have a little bit of everything,” Schultz says. “For football games and Friday night lights, all the high schools use the Jack Rhodes Memorial and Legacy Stadiums.”

Abundant parks and green spaces in Green Trails

According to Schultz, Green Trails is known for its big trees and abundant outdoor space; residents here are always within walking distance of a neighborhood pocket park or a recreational trail for hiking and biking. Most neighborhood parks – including Crescent Green Park, Wisdom Woods Park and Green Trails Pocket Park – have small playground areas for children. Desert Ivy Park also has a splash pad area adjacent to its playground. Near the northwest corner of the neighborhood is the Gerri Ayers Recreation Center, which has gated tennis courts and an outdoor swimming pool accessible to residents of the Green Trails subdivision. Along the eastern border of the neighborhood, starting at the Baker Road Pocket Park, is a paved pedestrian trail for cyclists and hikers; the trail runs south and passes through the Gary and Bonnie Trietsch Park, a 41-acre outdoor area with more than 3 miles of additional trails and several picnic areas. Residents also have easy access to trails like the Maud Marks Cut-off Trail, leading to a network of hiking paths that weave through the 7,800-acre George Bush Park and beyond. “You could literally bike from Green Trails all the way down into Houston,” Schultz says. “Some of the trails are paved, some are not.” George Bush Park also encompasses several athletic fields, dog parks and the Barker Reservoir.

Getting around Katy and the Houston metropolitan area

Not only is Interstate 10 a nearby thoroughfare that runs approximately 25 miles into downtown Houston, it’s also an interstate that connects commuters with major employers. “A lot of people come out to Green Trails and the Katy area for the energy jobs, and many of those facilities can be found right off I-10,” Schultz says. Green Trails residents also have proximity to Grand Parkway, or State Highway 99, a partially completed beltway that will eventually encircle the greater Houston metropolitan area. Directly across the street from the neighborhood is the Houston Methodist West Hospital, which offers 24-hour emergency services. Adjacent to the hospital is the Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus. George Bush Intercontinental Airport is a 37-mile drive away.

Stores and restaurants at Greentree Shopping Center

Residents can quickly access the Greentree Shopping Center, which borders Green Trails, for everyday shopping essentials and basic necessities. This shopping center has a Randalls grocery store, big-box stores like Target and other national retailers, including T.J. Maxx, Lowe’s Home Improvement, Ulta Beauty and Office Depot. Greentree Shopping Center is also home to several chain restaurants that serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. One popular option is Willie’s Grill and Icehouse, a Texas-based chain eatery where patrons can enjoy American fare in a retro pub-style interior.
