Ranches, bi-levels and farmhouses on large tracks of land

"Prices for homes and the taxes are still fairly reasonable in Newton County. If you go across the county line to Jasper, the taxes go way up. But it's still not Illinois taxes," Carmony says. Ranch-style homes are the most popular in the area, though it's also possible to find bi-levels, split levels, and farmhouses on large tracts of farmland. Manufactured and ranch-style homes begin in the mid-$100,000s, while farmhouse-style homes reach the low-$300,000s. Most homes in the area were built before the 1980s, with some homes dating back to the 1800s, but there are some newer developments as well. Recent developments include Deer Ridge Estates in Lake Village, which features two-story, Craftsmen-inspired homes starting at just under $400,000.
