Neighborhood in Lansing, Michigan
Ingham County 48912
The heart of Lansing’s Eastside is home to Eastfield, a neighborhood that manages to fit a shopping center, buzzing local restaurants, schools and competitively priced homes all in walkable footprint. Both Lansing and East Lansing have buzzing downtowns, as well as the state capitol and Michigan State University, within a few miles of Eastfield residents, making for a convenient bicycle, bus or car commute.
Many houses in the neighborhood were built in the early 1900s, with bungalows and two-story houses giving the residential area an established feel. Prices for these homes range from under $100,000 to the high $200,000s, which is more affordable than many of the surrounding areas, particularly East Lansing. “There’s quite a bit of price difference, and East Lansing tends to be more costly,” says Leanne Johnson, a Realtor with Weichert, Realtors - Home Towne. Condos in the East Village community were built after 2000, with prices up to $300,000 for the three- and four-bedroom homes.
East Michigan Avenue runs along the southern border of the community and features a few local restaurants, like The Avenue, a late-night hangout with live music, cocktails and some seriously delicious ramen. Strange Matter Coffee serves up locally roasted coffee and house-made donuts in a stylish, welcoming space. From brunch bites to craft beer flights and, of course, house-made soups, you can find your new favorite eats at The Soup Spoon Café, a comfortable spot to take your friends or meet your neighbors. The Frandor Shopping Mall is where you can stop by your nearby Kroger supermarket and other familiar brands, while Sparrow Urgent Care Lansing is a local hospital with an emergency room just to the west of the neighborhood.
Students in Eastfield can attend Eastern High School, a magnet school that features the Biotechnical Academy for students to explore this career area within a STEM-based curriculum. Lansing Catholic High School supports students through a house system that encourages positive communication and connections through daily meetings. At Pattengill Biotechnical Magnet School, elementary students learn through a STEM-based curriculum that focuses specifically on biotechnical topics, from hands-on chemistry experiments to field trips to Pruess Pets, a pet store and veterinarian clinic.
The thin, easy-to-miss George E. Ranney Park has an award-winning fast pitch softball diamond, a sizeable skateboard park and a large, manmade hill that is lined with the tracks and trails of sledding parties throughout the winter months. You can’t go far in the Eastside before finding a small neighborhood park with a playground, like nearby Marshall Park. Both Eastern High School and Lansing Catholic High School have fieldhouses, stadiums and athletic fields that cover much of western Eastfield and provide opportunities to cheer on the team on Friday nights.
Bordered by highways and main roads, Eastfield helps commuters easily travel throughout the greater Lansing area. East Michigan Avenue stretches from downtown Lansing to downtown East Lansing, passing the minor league baseball Lansing Lugnuts’ Jackson Field and Michigan State University’s Spartan Stadium, so you can join cheering crowds and local festivals in either direction.
