A relatively affordable suburb with access to employment

Nestled along the Grand River, Knollwood Willow is a turn-of-the-century Lansing suburb with access to public transportation, parks and employment. “It’s close to industry, and there are a lot of people who work at General Motors and the multiple insurance companies in Lansing,” says Realtor Stacee Robison, who sells homes in the neighborhood with Keller Williams Realty. National insurance companies like Auto-Owners Insurance and Jackson National Life are headquartered in Lansing. One of Knollwood Willow’s major appeals is its relatively affordable houses, which are priced at roughly half of Lansing’s median home price.

The neighborhood’s streets are lined with sidewalks, which are about 10 to 15 feet from the front porches. Many of the backyards have detached garages and are enclosed by wood or chain link fences. Most of the houses were built between the 1880s and the 1940s and are priced from $30,000 to $140,000. Styles include bungalows, shotgun styles and two-story wood frame houses. “These are older homes, so a lot of them require repairs,” Robison says.

The Lansing River Trail and other public parks

Within Knollwood Willow, Edmore Park has a playground and an open-air shelter. Just north of the river, Dietrich Park has a grilling area and access to Lansing River Trail, a paved 20-mile pathway. The trail connects to Turner-Dodge Park, home to the Turner-Dodge House, a historic mansion that was built in 1855. For Grand River paddlers and anglers, Edmore Park has a canoe launch. “Over the last 20 years, the river has gotten much cleaner because of cleanup efforts,” Robison says. Three blocks west of Knollwood Willow, Bassett Park has open sports fields and a bandstand.
