A strong community on Lansing’s Southside
While it may not have the same headline-making revitalization efforts as REO Town and other surrounding neighborhoods, residents of the Old Everett community continue to show that South Lansing has the tenacity to overcome economic setbacks. “It was built around industry,” says Brian Ozbun, a Realtor with Bellway Realty, LLC., who specializes in helping first-time homebuyers throughout Lansing. “There’s Washington Avenue, which is a main route to the center of downtown Lansing that had lots of shopping and restaurants. But when industry left, it affected the neighborhood, and many businesses left.” This setback, which affected much of the greater Lansing area, didn’t spell the end of Old Everett. “There’s the high school, Everett High, and a lot of local parks,” Ozbun says. “There are streets with some really nice homes, and it’s not far from downtown and East Lansing.”

Neighbors enjoy burrito bowls, tostadas and other Mexican fare at Tacos E Mas, a low-key spot focusing on fresh ingredients. Old Everett is also home to Slice by Saddleback, the pizzeria known for house-made dough and hot-fired ovens that’s a sister location of Saddleback BBQ, a REO Town slow-smoked sensation. For groceries, Old Everett residents can choose from the Global Food Market on Cedar Street or the Kroger and Great Giant Market on the corner of West Holmes Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
