The busy neighborhood built around industry
REO Town, also known as Midtown, is a bustling community brimming with small businesses, a rich history and established architecture. Featuring South Lansing’s signature triple smokestack skyline, manufacturing buildings, and rows of small shops, “REO Town was built around industry,” says Brian Ozbun, a Realtor with Bellabay Realty, LLC.
Residents enjoy modern conveniences including plentiful shopping and dining, simple commute options and a vibrant night scene. This neighborhood is also just east of GM’s Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant, the building site for the Camaro.
Unique restaurants, coffee shops and breweries
“With a vibe of culture, art and creativity, this area has a rich history of the auto industry and has a great mix of cool restaurants, shops and businesses with some very cool architecture,” says Missy Lord, a realtor with RE/MAX.
The neighborhood is named after Ransom E. Olds, whose REO Motor Car Company and Oldsmobile automotive powerhouses helped build the area. Today, the proud manufacturing history is still evident in the repurposed industrial buildings that house some of REO Town’s favorite breweries and dining options.
Good Truckin’ Diner is a laid-back restaurant offering eclectic menu items, like a cross between biscuits and doughnuts affectionally called “Bonuts.” Interestingly, the diner is also a hot spot for Taco Tuesdays. Saddleback BBQ REO Town is the original location of this local chain, best known for Southern barbecue with a Midwestern twist. “Saddleback BBQ is not only a delicious restaurant, but they also have made some huge contributions to our great community,” says Lord.
For a morning boost, Residents head to Blue Owl Coffee Co. And there are several local watering holes, including REO Town Pub.

Shopping, entertainment and Riverview Church
This vibrant community is home to the REO Town Marketplace, a farmer’s market and an artisan market in one hip venue. For everyday essentials and other grocery needs, residents head 7 miles west to Lansing Towne Center to shop at Target, Aldi and Meijer. Lansing Mall is also just across from the strip mall.
The Robin Theatre is where they can catch a comedy show, poetry reading or touring musical performance. And on Sundays, some head to Riverview Church, a non-denominational, diverse place of worship that features a sign language interpreter.

Recreation along the Grand River
“REO Town is right by the Grand River, which was one of the main attractions to the area long ago because the river helped create power for the manufacturing community,” Ozbun says. Today, the river is still a big attraction to the area thanks to its recreational opportunities.
Riverpoint Park sits at the confluence of the Grand River and Red Cedar River, inviting summertime kayaking, fishing and hours spent at the local playground. Thanks to the Lansing River Trail, locals can walk, run or cycle their way over 20 miles of the greater Lansing Area, from downtown to REO Town and beyond.

Homes are only a few blocks from Midtown dining, art galleries and paved pathways for walking and bicycling around the community. “The homes are affordable around Reo Town and most are within walking distance to all of the fun,” says Lord. Simple bungalows, sizeable American Foursquares and art-deco apartment buildings are the most common architectural styles.
“It’s a unique area because housing stock and prices are really street by street,” Ozbun says. Depending on the level of renovation needed and the area, homes can range from as low as $20,000 to $150,000.
More than a quarter of structures in the neighborhood are apartments, and more than 80% of residents rent their dwellings. Renters pay anywhere between $875 to $1,300 per month for a 12-month lease.
