Largo Central Park offers access to recreation, shopping, dining and the beach
Named after one of the city’s premier gathering places, Largo Central Park is a small neighborhood that offers appealing access to all the city offers. “It’s a really fabulous park, above and beyond most of the parks in the county,” says Barbara Brockwell, a longtime Largo resident who has been in the mortgage and real estate business for nearly two decades. “It’s a large park that hosts many events and festivities. It even has a railroad that offers train rides.” Residents are conveniently located to a host of attractions and amenities. “You’re very close to the beach, and there’s great shopping and two hospitals nearby,” Brockwell says.
Traditional and ranch homes that are affordably priced
Housing options are made up of older traditional homes in various styles and sizes and ranch-style homes built in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The occasional newly built contemporary home also can be found. “Everything is relative, but in my opinion, Largo has been a very well-kept secret and undervalued for many years,” Brockwell says. Ranch and contemporary options offer driveways and attached garages. Many homes include large yards, and several have backyard pools. Sidewalks provide appealing walkability along truncated streets. Prices range from the mid-$300,000s to the high $500,000s. “From an affordability perspective, as far as the market goes, Largo is still priced well,” Brockwell says. “But get in while you can!” Two-bedroom condos can be found adjacent to the neighborhood park in the Magnolia Square community, which features a community pool and tennis court. Prices range from the mid- to high $100,000s. HOA fees are just under $500 per month. The neighborhood is close enough to the coast that flooding and wind damage are risks during hurricane season, and insurance rates are likely to reflect that.
Central Park Performing Arts Center is a featured neighborhood attraction
Largo Central Park is the neighborhood’s defining feature. Acres of attractive green space surround the Central Park Performing Arts Center, a popular destination for citywide events that include concerts, kids shows and off-Broadway productions. The park also hosts a monthlong holiday lights festival every year and a “Train Weekend” once a month, where visitors can take a ride on the Largo Central Railroad’s miniature train. An all-access playground is also located at the park, which draws an estimated 1 million visitors per year. The Largo Public Library across the street is another community attraction. The neighborhood is also home to regular gatherings of the Largo Flying Club, an active community of remote-controlled plane enthusiasts. Adjacent to the neighborhood on either side are Bayhead Action Park, filled with athletic amenities in a waterfront setting, and a wildlife-heavy nature preserve with a boardwalk, observation tower and kayak launch. “We also have the Pinellas Trail. It’s a paved trail that runs through the entire county,” Brockwell says. Walkers, runners and bikers can access the 75-mile-long trail just outside the neighborhood. The East Bay Golf Club is next to the preserve. The popular public layout offers an 18-hole, par-71 course. The Intracoastal Waterway and the open waters of the Gulf are a haven for boaters, anglers and outdoors enthusiasts. The coast is 3 miles from the neighborhood, and its attractions include the world-renowned white-sand beaches of nearby barrier islands.
Top-rated Largo High School known for its fine arts department
The typical neighborhood pipeline begins with Southern Oak Elementary Schools, rated B-plus by Niche. From there, students attend Largo Middle School, rated B-minus, and Largo High School, rated A-minus. Largo High is just minutes from the neighborhood. It is known for its fine arts department and draws students from outside the geographic zone through the county’s school choice programs.
Restaurants, shopping are readily available within minutes
Benedict’s Restaurant is a highly rated, homestyle eatery just outside the neighborhood along Bay Drive, which forms the neighborhood’s northern edge. The commercial corridor offers quick access to shopping and dining destinations, including the Publix-anchored Pinellas Shopping Center nearby. Construction recently began on the Horizon West Bay multi-use project just blocks from the neighborhood. “A brand-new Largo City Hall is being built near the park,” Brockwell says. “Lots of good things are happening in the area.” Walmart and a concentration of additional restaurants are located about a mile away along Missouri Avenue, which runs along the neighborhood’s west side.
Hospital, airport are nearby
Buses run regularly along Bay Drive and U.S. Highway 19 Alternate, providing convenient transportation to local points of interest. HCA Florida Largo Hospital is less than 2 miles away via Bay Drive. U.S. Highway 19 Alternate provides quick access to Clearwater less than 5 miles away. U.S. Highway 19 is about 4 miles away and provides a direct, albeit heavily trafficked, route to St. Petersburg. The St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport is about 6 miles from the neighborhood.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
