Home to historic Gothic landmark
Castlewood shares its name with this area's community park, which is also home to the 'castle-like' Loudoun House. A historic estate built in 1850 for a relative of Francis Scott Key (the author of the Star-Spangled Banner), Loudon House was designed by influential New York architect Alexander Jackson Davis and features a Gothic-Revival design. While no other house in Castlewood is of the same grandeur, the neighborhood does feature an assortment of World War II-era cottages, many of which stand out for their limestone exteriors. Their modest sizes also add to Castlewood being less expensive than other Lexington neighborhoods. Ryan Camenisch, a Realtor with The Brokerage, believes Castlewood's main draw is its combination of “holistically diverse architecture and proximity to amenities like parks, coffee shops, bike shops and grocery stores." He adds, "I personally do think the upside is the architectural character and timeless qualities.”
The Loudoun House was built by architect Alexander Jackson Davis in 1851.

Most of Castlewood’s brick and stone houses are no larger than 1,500 square feet and many have footprints smaller than 1,000 square feet. Situated on lots no larger than a quarter-of-an-acre, some of which are raised and have paved stairways, the area features narrow streets and sidewalks tht increase the community's walkability. Despite the cozy size of the homes, Castlewood features Craftsman, Cape Cod, ranch-style and English Tudor cottage designs. Depending on size and condition, most homes here cost between $130,000 to $250,000. The lower price index, " makes it more approachable for first-time homebuyers or blue collars,” says Camenisch. “In general, it’s always going to be multi-faceted as to why certain areas have appeal. For Castlewood, it’s a complex amalgamation of variables, but I do like the neighborhood, especially for entry-level homes that have character."
