Home to historic Gothic landmark

Castlewood shares its name with this area's community park, which is also home to the 'castle-like' Loudoun House. A historic estate built in 1850 for a relative of Francis Scott Key (the author of the Star-Spangled Banner), Loudon House was designed by influential New York architect Alexander Jackson Davis and features a Gothic-Revival design. While no other house in Castlewood is of the same grandeur, the neighborhood does feature an assortment of World War II-era cottages, many of which stand out for their limestone exteriors. Their modest sizes also add to Castlewood being less expensive than other Lexington neighborhoods. Ryan Camenisch, a Realtor with The Brokerage, believes Castlewood's main draw is its combination of “holistically diverse architecture and proximity to amenities like parks, coffee shops, bike shops and grocery stores." He adds, "I personally do think the upside is the architectural character and timeless qualities.”

Smaller houses with architectural diversity

Most of Castlewood’s brick and stone houses are no larger than 1,500 square feet and many have footprints smaller than 1,000 square feet. Situated on lots no larger than a quarter-of-an-acre, some of which are raised and have paved stairways, the area features narrow streets and sidewalks tht increase the community's walkability. Despite the cozy size of the homes, Castlewood features Craftsman, Cape Cod, ranch-style and English Tudor cottage designs. Depending on size and condition, most homes here cost between $130,000 to $250,000. The lower price index, " makes it more approachable for first-time homebuyers or blue collars,” says Camenisch. “In general, it’s always going to be multi-faceted as to why certain areas have appeal. For Castlewood, it’s a complex amalgamation of variables, but I do like the neighborhood, especially for entry-level homes that have character."

Bordering one of Lexington’s eclectic restaurant and bar scenes

Castlewood's proximity to North Limestone — or “NoLi” — adds to the community's appeal. Known as one of Lexington’s most eclectic neighborhoods, most residents can walk to Noli within minutes. Offering a variety of shops, and restaurants, places like Greyline Station — once a former Greyhound bus station — is now a marketplace. North Lime Coffee & Donuts is a popular morning stop specializing in square-shaped pastries. While those looking to grab an order of wings to-go can stop by the Wing Kyng. The Old North Bar serves up more comfort foods, plus cookies and espressos in a laidback environment. For an after-work drink, the Bespoken Spirits Lounge and Darling Wine Bar is one option, while Bespoken makes craft whiskeys, which patrons can purchase in custom-made to-go bottles. “It’s kind of really cool that you get to pick your own whiskey when you come into the facility,” says Jared Bickel, the distillery’s director of customer relations. Other trendy places include clothing store, Vintage Therapy, and Broomwagon Bikes, which sells and repairs bicycles. ALDI and Walmart are among the nearest grocery shopping options.

Castlewood’s recreational jewel

The 32-acre Castlewood Park is one of the largest and oldest parks in Lexington. Anchored by an expansive playground complete with slides, bridges, ramps and a swing, the park also features basketball and tennis courts plus baseball fields. During the summer months, many in the city flock to Castlewood to swim at the Aquatic Center and Sprayground. Canopies around the pool keep parents cool while their children play. For a historic tour, the Loudoun House welcomes art enthusiasts to its different gallery exhibits held throughout the year. The Lexington Art League, which runs the venue, also rents spaces to various local artists. “The Loudoun House is incredible,” Bickel says. “It’s obviously historic, and it’s just beautiful and communal. It brings a great artistry and feeling when you walk in the door.” Bickel belongs to the Kentucky Bourbon Influences, a group which also hosts events at the Loudoun House.
