A vibrant destination
Squeezing plenty of life into a compact footprint – only three blocks wide and five blocks long – the urban enclave of NuLu is a hotspot filled with eateries, art galleries, shops and bourbon distilleries. “Although NuLu doesn’t have a huge residential presence, the neighborhood is a destination for its hotels, bars and restaurants,” says longtime Louisville resident Barrett Goff, principal broker and founder of Allodium Real Estate. “It’s a very walkable area with a lot of character.” The hustle and bustle, dining and shopping, is perfect for the active crowd and those who want to enjoy the nightlife and the noise when the party goes on well into the evening. It also doesn’t hurt that Downtown Louisville, jobs hotspots, and the Ohio River shoreline are only mere blocks away.
The neighborhood of NuLu is located just east of downtown Louisville.

The centerpiece of Louisville’s dining and shopping scene
Variety is certainly the spice of life in NuLu, Goff says, “The businesses that call NuLu home are bringing a really unique flavor to the community.” Nationally recognized Feast BBQ and their sister restaurant Royals Hot Chicken bring their versions of Southern favorites to the table in modern surroundings, while La Bodeguita De Mima brings Cuban tradition and flavor to life in a bright, colorful spot with outdoor dining. The Garage Bar is one of many restaurants to make use of the older buildings within the neighborhood, serving wood-fired pizza and craft beer in a former auto shop. Diners can finish off the night in different ways - those looking for a sweet treat can indulge in one-of-a-kind ice cream flavors at Louisville Cream, while those looking for a drink can enjoy a craft beer at Akasha Brewing Company or try some Kentucky craft bourbon and rye whiskey at the Rabbit Hole Distillery.
Outside the NuLu Marketplace, shoppers take in the spirited message and vibrant colors of “The Unified Race,” a mural celebrating the Kentucky Derby. The marketplace also includes an array of additional restaurants, shops, bars and living spaces. Revelry Boutique + Gallery offers work from numerous local artists, while the Louisville Antique Market features relics of local culture and history.

Plenty nearby, and convenience to the surrounding region
Located directly adjacent to Butchertown, “Butchertown and NuLu are very interchangeable terms,” Goff notes. “Though they are distinct neighborhoods, they go hand in hand.” Downtown Louisville is only minutes away by bicycle, public transit or walking. Convenient access to major thoroughfares like Interstate 65 and East Main Street connects NuLu residents to neighboring communities. Both Norton Hospital and University of Louisville Health are just blocks outside of the neighborhood, while the Louisville Muhammad Ali Airport is 6 miles south, usually a 10-minute drive but also accessible via public transportation.

Get ready, get set, goat!
NuLu’s vibrant community celebrates its diverse residents at NuLu Fest, the annual September block party that showcases local food, craft beers, vendors and live music. The NuLu Bock Fest also gives a nod to the area’s history and its role as a gathering place for German immigrants by celebrating an unlikely pair: beer and goats. With a variety of German Bock-style beers on tap, the festival hosts goat races - bock is the German word for goat - and features vendors and awards for best goat costume. “The Bock Fest expands into neighboring Butchertown,” Goff says. “It’s a very cool scene that lots of people come to enjoy.”
Sluggers, skaters and scenic views
Sports fans can head to the nearby Louisville Slugger Field to cheer on a Louisville Bats game or catch a Louisville City FC game at the Lynn Family Stadium, the largest soccer stadium in the region. Outdoor enthusiasts can walk the scenic loop at Cherokee Park, a green space spanning nearly 400 acres, while the Dave Armstrong Extreme Park is a haven for skateboarders. A landmark in the skating scene throughout Kentucky and Indiana since 2002, the park offers a full pipe, a vert ramp, bowls and more for skaters of all ages.

Modern condos, rowhouses and lofts
With the focus on retail, restaurants and entertainment, NuLu's housing options are limited, with condos and lofts being the norm. These span from brick two- and three-story row houses to modern lofts and a scattering of century-old stand-alone cottages. Many of these provide hints of the past, from brick and stone facades to hardwood floors and decorative glass. The median price for homes sits around $270,000, with modest one-bedroom, one-bathroom condos starting around $165,000 and expansive modern luxury condos going for upwards of $370,000. Condos in general come with private, gated, off-street parking – which offers secure parking in a neighborhood with a crime score of 9 out of 10 on the CAP Index. Stand-alone one- and two-story cottages generally go for between $250,000 and $375,000 but are extremely rare finds, as it’s normal for only one or two units to be for sale here at any given time.

A call to post
Every year, the Kentucky Derby brings tens of thousands of visitors to town, and NuLu is right in the thick of things. Events that make up the Kentucky Derby Festival run for a full two weeks leading up to the race itself, and many attendees make their way to NuLu to eat and drink late into the evenings, turning up the volume in the already noisy neighborhood. Residents can look out the window as the Derby Festival Marathon makes its way through their streets, or catch a glimpse of Thunder Over Louisville from their rooftops.
