Up-and-coming small town by the big city
Just minutes from downtown St. Louis, Madison offers the tranquility of a small town and the exhilaration of top-tier motorsports. With a celebrated golf course, a famous raceway and riverfront hiking trails, there’s much to do in this city suburb.
NASCAR and live music
Madison is home to the 65,000-seat World Wide Technology Raceway, which hosts races for NASCAR and professional drag racing leagues. “We had been trying to get NASCAR here for a while, and this summer will be our third season with them,” says Sue Beatte, the city of Madison’s Deputy Clerk. “NASCAR has brought a ton of growth to the area — our home market has already shown growth, with new construction in progress. We’re in a transition period, where the market is flipping from rentals to home ownership, as more and more people realize everything Madison offers.”
In 2022, Illinois’ state government estimated that the recent NASCAR Cup Series at World Wide Technology Raceway generated $60 million for the region, benefitting local restaurants, bars and shops. Local officials typically issue traffic advisories on big-race weekends for locals to avoid the snarls along approaches to the track, at the junction of State Route 203, U.S. Highway 40 and interstates 70 and 55. Residents who aren’t intrigued by the roar of engines and the burning of rubber can still enjoy performances from world-famous musicians, like Metallica, at the venue. Smaller race events also take place at the track.
Riverfront hikes and intramural sports
Madison has small city parks woven into the residential areas, including 7th & Lee Public Park, where parents can watch their children at the playground from the comfort of their front porches. Madison Baseball Diamonds, located on 12th and Alton Streets, is a popular spot on the weekend. Bette said co-ed softball leagues are popular on Friday nights at the ball fields, and Saturday mornings are typically devoted to youth games and practices. "Their parents bring coffee and walk the track around the fields,” she said.
Beyond residential parks and between Madison and St. Louis is the Mississippi River. One of the world’s longest bicycle and pedestrian bridges, Old Chain of Rocks Bridge & Park spans the Mississippi River and Illinois-Missouri divide, connecting the St. Louis Riverfront Trail and the MCT Confluence Trail. The bridge is a favorite local spot for photography and bird-watching. Below the bridge, the Chouteau Island Nature Trail, constructed from recycled local mulch, offers a scenic walk along the river. It branches off to the Chouteau Island Fishing Area, where locals fish for largemouth bass and hunt for fossils on the rocky shore.
Gateway National offers the only public bent grass fairways in St. Louis. This 18-hole golf course is popular with novices and experts alike. After golfing, guests enjoy a meal or drinks at the 19th Hole Lounge, Gateway National’s clubhouse. The clubhouse, inspired by Scottish architecture, hosts private parties and business functions for up to 120 people, and its outdoor pavilion has views of the first tee and 18th green.
Marko's Fish Restaurant
Restaurants are dotted along Madison Avenue, but one small cottage stands out: Marko’s Fish Restaurant. Its open-layout kitchen provides views of frying fish, and its casual atmosphere has kept it a popular spot since the 1920s. Further down the street, Madison Meat Market is convenient for quick grocery runs. Bigger chain supermarkets like Walmart and Schnucks are less than two miles away in Granite City.
Craftsman and shotgun-style houses
Houses in Madison are primarily single-story shotgun and Craftsman-style houses from the early 1900s. While most houses are small, with under 1,200 square feet on average, their size difference compared to other neighborhoods is reflected in their lower prices. Houses are mainly priced between $50,000 and $75,000, with outliers reaching the mid $100,000s. Madison’s housing market offers “bang for your buck,” says Judy Browning, a real estate broker with Nester Realty. Despite most homes dating back nearly a century, Browning says the city is diligent about removing or renovating derelict homes before they become eyesores.
Madison Community Unity District 12
Madison has its own public school system—Madison Community Unity District 12—so the trip to or from school is never more than 2 miles. Students may attend Bernard Long Elementary School, graded C- by Niche, Madison Junior High School, graded D+, and Madison Senior High School, graded C.
Transportation
Madison is about 6 miles northeast of downtown St. Louis, and depending on traffic, driving between the two takes 15 to 30 minutes. Highway routes include State Route 203 and I-55 or I-70, and local routes take Broadway across the McKinley Bridge.
Public transit is accessible once in the city limits but does not run as frequently in Madison. To combat this, Madison County Transit offers regional bus services to the Emerson Park Station, where the City Metro Link continues across the river.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
