Dolphins to the east and chickens to the west
In Malabar, it’s not uncommon to spot dolphin pods leaping in and out of the Indian River, and alligators live amongst the mangrove trees at Turkey Creek Sanctuary. East of Palm Bay on Florida’s Space Coast, there’s still plenty of farmland in Malabar. “A lot of people keep chickens or goats in their backyards, and some even own horses” says Lauren Merrell, a Space Coast local and Realtor with a specialty in luxury homes. “It’s one of those towns where everyone knows everyone,” she adds. Although there’s no commercial center in Malabar, residents will find a small town hall on Malabar Road. Retail centers in downtown Palm Bay are just a few miles to the west, and Melbourne offers arts and culture opportunities up north. With the exception of squawking chickens and the hum of passing motorboats, life here is quiet.
Ranch-styles and waterfront estates
“Malabar is a collection of farms and larger home sites,” says Merrell. Buyers will find manufactured homes starting at $200,000 and 1980s-era ranch-styles for between $300,000 and $600,000 depending on square footage. Luxury estates with views of the Indian River, many of which have stucco exteriors and Mediterranean-inspired tiled roofs, sometimes sell for upwards of $1 million. Buyers can also build their dream homes on undeveloped lots. For instance, in gated communities like Oakmont Preserve, an acre of land can sell for close to $200,000.

Specialized STEAM interests at Palm Bay Magnet High School
Malabar students are incorporated into the Brevard Public School System and, depending on their address, can attend Port Malabar Elementary, Stone Magnet Middle School and Palm Bay Magnet High School, all of which received a B-minus or higher from the educational review site, Niche. At Stone Magnet Middle and Palm Bay Magnet High, students explore specialized interests in STEAM fields. Some high schoolers even enroll in college-level courses at the Florida Institute of Technology (FIT) in Melbourne, and the PBMHS robotics team has competed in the VEX Robotics World Championship.
Fried seafood and water views along U.S. Highway 1
A short drive away from Malabar’s equestrian properties and backyard chicken coops is the larger city of Palm Bay and a surplus of shopping and dining destinations. Up U.S. Highway 1 residents will find the Shack Riverfront Restaurant & Outback Tiki Bar. Sit by the river, listen to live music and enjoy a crabby patty with a side of fries. Or head down to the Old Fish House Bar and Grill, the site of a historic Brevard County fish processing center. The restaurant has managed to preserve its old Florida charm, and locals know to order the fried green tomatoes.
For groceries and household necessities, head a few miles west to Publix supermarket or Walmart Supercenter at the Shoppes of Palm Bay — make sure to stop by Twisty Cone on the way for some soft serve. “Twisty Cone hasn’t changed much in the last 40 years,” says Merrell, adding that this was a roadside staple when she was a kid growing up on the Space Coast.
Outdoor sporting opportunities and musicals in downtown Melbourne
In Malabar, most residents will spend at least part of their week on the water. Kayak at Turkey Creek Sanctuary, looking out for turtles in the shallows. Or head to Malabar Disc Golf Sanctuary across from the Malabar Fire Department to try out their 18-hole course. Disc golf — also known as frisbee golf — is a popular pastime amongst Space Coast residents. Residents can also play tennis, basketball or baseball at Malabar Community Park.
For more arts and culture opportunities, locals drive north to downtown Melbourne. Watch a musical at the Henegar Center for the Arts or visit the murals in the Eau Gallie Arts District.

Direct flights from Melbourne Orlando International Airport and a nearby hospital
Given Malabar’s rural landscape, residents will need their own cars — or well-trained horses — to get around. Travel 9 miles (or about 15 minutes) north up U.S. Highway 1 to reach the Melbourne Orlando International Airport, which offers direct flights to a limited selection of U.S. cities including Minneapolis and Atalanta. Seasonally, Space Coast passengers can fly TUI Airways to U.K. locations like Edinburgh and Belfast.
For medical care, residents can head 3 miles inland to Health First’s Palm Bay Hospital. The facility offers a wide range of medical services from intensive care to occupational therapy.

There are a lot of engineers in the area, so the overall average income is probably pretty high: I haven't job searched, so I don't know about the market.

There are many restaurants in the nearby towns. Malabar is a tiny town, but is right next to Palmbay and Melbourne. There is a wide variety, and everywhere I've eaten has been excellent-- though I don't eat out as often as some so I haven't tried everywhere. As I don't generally eat kosher or halal, I don't have much input on that factor.

Malabar is a very close-knit neighborhood, although quite rural. It has many farmers, with a lot of farmland and pastures. It feels safe and has a low crime rate. The schools are very good and have a nice list to choose from with different specialties for each school. Overall, it is a quaint, small, community to raise a family and is welcoming.
