A diverse, cultural landscape with artistic roots
In this eclectic, progressive neighborhood with punk rock and literary roots, expect to find a mix of co-ops in prewar walk-ups, renovated duplexes, historic townhomes, industrial lofts, and mid-to-high-rise condos. While remnants of its counterculture heritage are still present, like most of Manhattan, the East Village has transformed from a landscape of inexpensive rentals and gritty bars to one where luxury condos and world-class restaurants are fast becoming the norm, especially given the influence of nearby NYU. “It’s fun, young, exciting, and emerging,” says Lisa Lippman, a real estate agent for Brown Harris Stevens and top seller who represents condos in 311 East 11th Street, the first LEED Gold certified building in the area. “It’s one of the last neighborhoods in New York City where there’s a real mix. It’s grittiness with gentrification,” she adds.
The eclectic St Marks offers dozens of eateries, bars, & tattoo parlors in the East Village.

World-class gastronomy and hip nightlife
Global cuisine includes Ukrainian pierogies and borscht at Veselka (a cozy, James Beard-nominee diner), Indian spots on 6th Street, Moroccan-inspired cuisine at Cafe Mogador, and Asian fusion along St. Marks Place. It’s a decent neighborhood for bar-hopping, despite the somewhat raucous, 20-something party scene on the weekends, with long-standing dives like International Bar, old school Irish pubs like McSorley’s, and high-end cocktail bars like Amor y Amargo. While gentrification coupled with the pandemic has led to the closure of many beloved spots over the years, there’s still a heady mix of nightlife options, from speakeasy-style lounges to clubs with live music.
East Village residents will enjoy a variety of bars & nightlife throughout the neighborhood.
Cooper's Craft & Cocktails offers locally crafted and imported beers in the East Village.

Everything from modest co-ops and new luxury condos like Steiner East Village
There’s currently a number of renovated prewar co-ops and luxury condos: “It used to be primarily rentals, but it’s become much fancier in the last 5–10 years,” says Lippman. One to three-bedroom condos in mid-to-high-rise buildings typically range between $1.3 million to $3 million, as well as in newer builds, like the boutique condominium designed by acclaimed architect Morris Adjmi at 45 East 7th Street and the glass-clad condo conversion at Steiner East Village. Co-ops can start as low as $400,000 for a snug studio or around $600,000 for a prewar one-bed walkup, but can easily rise to over $1 million for renovated apartments and lofts.
Modern Condos can be typically found throughout East Village.

A myriad of vintage shops, local markets, and big-box grocery stores
Given its hipster vibes and bohemian roots, it’s no surprise to find a ton of vintage and secondhand shops, as well as trendy (read: somewhat pricey) boutiques and specialty shops. Strand bookstore is further west on 12th Street and there are bodegas and small, locally-owned markets and grocers between First and Third avenues. Le Fournil, a French bakery known for their fresh bread and croissants is also a local favorite. There’s also a Trader Joe’s on 14th Street, an H Mart, and a new Wegmans at Astor Place.

Historical venues, farmer’s markets, and art events
Cultural holdouts for film and theater include the Village East by Angelika, a 20th century movie theater designed in Moorish Revival style, AMC theaters, and the Anthology Film Archives. Each weekend, locals can find farmers markets to the north in Union Square Park and east in Tompkins Square Park.
The Village East is an iconic movie theater, that shows both independent and mainstream films.

Plenty of subway lines, but expect to walk or take the bus between avenues
East Village has multiple subway options: The F at Second Avenue, the L train along 14th Street, the 6 at Astor Place and the hub at Union Square. FDR Drive is also nearby for easy access to connecting boroughs and the east side of Manhattan.
The 6 train at Astor Place offers convenient access to both ends of Manhattan.
Residents embrace the art culture commonly found in the East Village lifestyle.
