Marlboro Township’s vast borders brim with suburban communities, scenic parkland, and years of rich history. Encompassing hundreds of acres of former farmland, Marlboro enjoys a serene existence in Monmouth County’s storied countryside, while providing residents with easy access to the Garden State Parkway and Route 18 and serving as a gateway both to the regional hub of Freehold and the New York metropolitan area.

Marlboro’s rich history dates to the colonial era, when the area consisted of several hamlets, whose names – such as Morganville and Wickatunk – are still used to describe some of Marlboro’s now-suburban communities. Marlboro was named for the abundance of marl minerals in the area, and this wealth of soil-improving materials helped spur Marlboro’s growth, a process that never truly stopped. Marlboro continues to be a bustling suburb of Monmouth County, with homes old and new lining its streets.

Marlboro’s long history and persistent growth are reflected in these housing styles. Its myriad residential streets are home to colonial-style houses, neoclassical homes, and Tudor residences, as well as recently built ranch-style homes and houses built in contemporary styles. Marlboro’s residential streets are marked by large front lawns, often accompanied by manicured gardens and double sidewalks. Local home prices tend to average $700,000, above the state average of $500,000, reflecting Marlboro’s popularity.

This township sprawls across much of rural Monmouth County, with much of the region’s nature preserved at the Big Brook Park. This massive nature preserve, its stream, its wildlife, and even its bounty of fossils can be explored through hiking trails and through walking through the stream itself. Bicyclists can enjoy the thrill of a scenic bike ride across Central Jersey due to the presence of the Henry Hudson Trail, which runs through the park and bends along the Jersey Shore dozens of miles to the northeast. For those looking to explore another scenic location, the Sri Guruvaayoorappan Temple, a local Hindu temple built in the South Indian style, includes a prominent gopura tower, several statues, and an ornate gazebo on its grounds, and is a rare architectural wonder to behold.

A similarly creative exterior houses the Crown Palace Chinese restaurant. With a statue garden greeting customers, this temple-themed restaurant serves both dim-sum brunches and a full menu of Chinese classics. Sam Vera, located just off Newman Springs Road, also offers a unique dining experience. This restaurant, housed within a Victorian home, serves northern Italian delicacies and desserts with an extensive wine list for the classic fine dining experience.

Grocery shopping is facilitated by the presence of supermarkets such as the Food Emporium and a ShopRite. For those in the mood for a New Jersey-style breakfast, Bagel Talk sells bagels by the dozen, as well as bagel sandwiches made to order, and an array of cold cuts and snacks to make for a complete meal.

Marlboro’s students are served by five elementary schools, two middle schools, and Marlboro High School, listed among the nation’s top high schools, and the alma mater of actress Melissa Rauch, of Big Bang Theory fame.
