Centrally-located amenities and residences
With the Wolf River and Arkansan border just to the west, and the lights of downtown Memphis to the south, Uptown Memphis provides its residents with local flair in a centrally-located neighborhood. Whether it’s the northern, more residential part of the region or the vibrant Pinch District on the south side, known for the Bass Pro Shops Pyramid, St. Jude’s Memorial Research Hospital and several area breweries, Uptown Memphis’ central location is one of its most desirable qualities. “It has proximity to the Pinch District, Mud Island along the water, downtown Memphis and cool breweries,” says Fara Captain, owner of Captain & Co. Real Estate. “It has walkability, bike-ability and connections to the Wolf River. Downtown isn’t even 15 minutes away.”

Shotgun Homes are one of the architectural styles found in Uptown Memphis
Shotgun homes along the streets
Contemporary and Craftsman styling can be found here and there in Uptown Memphis, but the area’s primary architectural designs are shotgun constructions. Many residences within the neighborhood were built in the early 2000s, with some older properties mixed in. “Most of the uptown was planned out for shotgun homes,” Captain says. “Prices usually range anywhere from $150,000 to $300,000.” Many typically sell for between $200,000 and $250,000. Colorful exteriors dot the walkable streets of Uptown Memphis, some even close enough to be linked by small sidewalks winding through the homes’ lawns.
Schools beyond Uptown Memphis’ boundaries
From pre-kindergarten through fifth grade, students can attend Downtown Elementary School, which receives a grade of C-minus on Niche and is located just a few minutes south of Uptown Memphis across Interstate 40. Humes Preparatory Academy Middle School is the only educational institution within the boundaries of Uptown Memphis, serving as a charter school and also grading at a C-minus with Niche. Manassas High School continues the topographical northward trajectory, situated a few miles up in North Memphis, and receives a C-minus from Niche while ranking in the top half of high schools for athletes in the state.

Small parks and open space by the river
Shoot some hoops at Greenlaw Park, a two-acre property situated near the center of Uptown Memphis. Along with its community center, visitors can also utilize its basketball courts and playground or enjoy the open space. The coast is where most of the parks are, though, as Beale Street Landing and Tom Lee Park are both located along the water. Winchester Park, nearby to the southeast, spans just over eight acres and has a playground and green space. The Uptown Community Garden is just across the street from Greenlaw, giving residents a chance to hone their planting skills. “There’s a few parks just minutes from uptown,” Captain says. “Mud Island is amazing and has a running and biking trail that goes down by the Wolf River.”

Seafood, sips and southern staples
Grab some Memphis flavor by visiting some of the restaurants within the uptown area. Within the vibrant, mural-covered exterior of Straight Drop Seafood, customers can find combos on the menu awaiting their taste buds. At Muggin’ Coffeehouse, which prides itself on bringing the community together, find drinks hot or cold along with baked goods and catering services. Several local grocery stores offer general needs, like the Family Market, its exterior adorned with art, near Greenlaw Park. “Westy’s and Alcenia’s are a part of the Pinch District,” Captain says. “That area is up-and-coming – Alcenia’s owner BJ Chester-Tamayo is a very well-known southern food celebrity. Anyone working in downtown city buildings goes to lunch there. Comeback Coffee is also a cool coffee shop.”

An architectural flair near Uptown Memphis
The most notable point of the Uptown Memphis Skyline is the Memphis Pyramid, more commonly known as the Bass Pro Shops Pyramid. It was initially intended for use as an arena, but in 2015 opened its doors as a huge location for the sporting goods company. Within its more than 300-foot-tall structure, visitors can find not just shopping, but a hotel, recreational opportunities like archery, dining and even lookout areas to watch the sunsets on the Mississippi River. Residents living in Uptown Memphis are also just minutes away from the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts, where the Memphis Symphony Orchestra holds court along with live productions of ballet and stage. The Renasant Convention Center is also nearby, hosting business retreats and auto shows along with other events.

Uptown Memphis' southern border is defined by Interstate 40.
Interstate connections to the south
Just to the west, the Wolf River and Wolf River Harbor run between the Memphis area and Mud Island, a peninsula running parallel to the city’s coastline, while St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital comprises a large portion of the neighborhood’s southeastern area. The southern border of Uptown Memphis consists of Interstate 40, which crosses the Mississippi River to the west into Arkansas and also passes through Nashville and Knoxville as it runs eastward. On a broader scale, I-40 reaches as far west as California and as far east as North Carolina. Downtown Memphis isn’t a far drive, either. Even at times of heavier traffic, motorists typically aren’t more than 10 to 15 minutes from the city. “Most of the area is fairly local, updated homes that are really affordable,” Captain says. “It’s kind of a hidden gem."
